Changing spark plugs on Nissan Frontier?????

I changed all but #6, it's impossible to get to. I looked up Nissan site and there is a way to rig up a ratchet that is supposed to work, but didn't. Any suggestions, besides taking it to the dealership?

Get a universal sparkplug socket.
Why can't you get to it? I assume it's maybe a manifold or something? Some parts you can remove yourself if they're minor, but not an exhaust manifold. Have you tried hitting it from underneathe? I know a lot of newer cars with tighter compartments require some creative positioning when it comes to things like this. How about jacking the car up and going through a wheel well or something? Maybe even just turning the wheels and trying to reach in that way? (not sure how your engine is mounted in that though)

Grab a Hayne's Manual for your car. They're year and model specific and are only around $10-15. They detail all kinds of work and typically let you know when you need to use a trick or something. Lots of pics, very informative and generally something that should be a requirement when you buy a car.

What is the most easiest way to change out the back spark plugs on my 2003 impala?
It really helps if you have a 12%26quot; 3/8 ratchet with a swivel head and a magnetic 3/8 drive 5/8 deep well socket. You do not need a 3/8 universal joint, just a very short 3/8 extension from Sears.

Husky and S%26amp;K makes a swivel head ratchet. You may get by without one as I've changed the rear plugs just fine on a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3800 V-6 with a standard 3/8 drive S%26amp;K ratchet. Don't forget to twist the spark plug boots clockwise and counterclockwise before pulling the *boot straight off. It pays to wipe on some silicone ignition grease inside the spark plug boots before snapping them back on. If you have over 75,000 miles in the original AC-Delco ignition wires now is the time to replace them. *Do not buy cheap no name ignition wires. Stick to AC-Delco or MSD wires from: autopartswarehouse.com. Don't skimp on the OEM AC-Delco iridium spark plugs either. Nothing else will last as long or run any better.

socket, long extentions and a couple of elbow joints... may be tricky but the right tools help...good luck..

Is it easy to change spark plugs for 2004 chevy tahoe? which brand do u recommend?

my car needs new spark plugs....i was wondering if it was easy b/c my dealership is trying to charge me 150 for it which i know is over priced considering the most expensive spark plugs i can find at kragens r sold for only 7 bucks.
Is it easy to change spark plugs for 2004 chevy tahoe? which brand do u recommend?
It is usually not that expensive to get spark plugs. AC Del Co is the one that I deal with when I actually install spark plugs. As long the ratchet, extension, gap tool, and correct socket, it will probably take less than a hour. Ask the store for the correct gap.

Gap all the sparks right away so that way do not forget about it. Pull the wire off the spark plug. Remove the spark plug. Install the new spark plug initially without the ratchet. You do not want to strip the threads on the heads (costly repair). Use the ratchet to snug them lightly. Put the wire back on. Just keep going to you are all done.

Do not mix up the wires. It is hard sometimes to figure out which goes where.

don't cheap out on plugs that's the hart beat of the thing , Iridium are top of the line they'll last 100,000 k/m about ten bucks a pop but worth it as for the dealership that what i payed total to do it right 65.00 for plugs that i bought my self so just payed 60.00 for labor one hour to change them in V6
Hi

Tell them you want the old plugs. That way they may not think to do you over because they know whats up. And also you have a set of plugs that may help you later. Always ask for your old parts. Then you can prove if they are honest or not!
I usually get autolite platnums, but you can go with the original OEM plug. No it is rather easy to do if you have the right tools. 5/8 Spark plug socket 3 and 6 inch extensions, plug gapper. Can be done in less than an hour.
they are not that hard to change. your better off to stay with it calls for and thats AC.

Why won't my Craftsman LT3000 Lawn Tractor start? I've changed spark plugs, air filters etc. ?

It died this morning while I was mowing and now won't start - even after changing everthying I could think of to change.
Why won't my Craftsman LT3000 Lawn Tractor start? I've changed spark plugs, air filters etc. ?
If your machine will turn over but not start you should first check for spark to the spark plug and work backward. Common problems are that the kill wire going from the coil to the key switch is grounded, or one of the safety switches is bad. Most models have at least a safety switch on the seat to prevent the mower from starting unless someone is in the seat, and another to prevent you from engaging the mower when the trans is in reverse. A fuel restriction, debris in the tank outlet, filter or float valve could also be to blame.

Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar?

I hear the plugs are under the vehicle. I'm looking for a free site to get tips, or infor you all can give me. Thanks
Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar?
The easiest means of changing them is to remove the engine cover from the inside of the cabin.

There are three snap-clamps holding the cover in place.

Place the shifter in %26quot;D-1%26quot; (all the way to the rear of the car) and release the snap on the driver's side, then the snap on the passenger's side, then the snap on the passenger's upper corner.

Remove the cover and change the plugs and wires.

Replace the cover carefully, or it could be damaged, or perhaps not seal well, and then there will be noise and hot air from the engine compartment while you drive.

SUGGESTION: Change the cap and rotor as well as the PCV valve at the same time. This will save a bit of effort when it comes time to tune it up again.
Does anyone know how to change spark plugs and wires for a 95 ford aerostar?
You can access most of the spark plugs from under the interior cover (Doghouse) On that year Aerostar, you will need to access 2 on the passenger side from underneath the vehicle behind the fender well. Very difficult to do without the correct swivels and sockets. Good Luck.
They shouldn't be under the vehicle unless the vehicle is on its roof.

It is really quit simple, you will need a spark plug socket, 12%26quot; extension, and a ratchet.

Remove only one wire at a time, and replace that plug and wire before moving to the next one.

Whatever you do, DO NOT take all the wires off at one time, they have to be in a certain order.

Before installing plugs, make sure that the gap is right(distance between contact points).

That info should be in your car manual, if not go .030-.040 gap.

    Good luck
drain the oil from the car for the safelty viewpoiint, we cant take chances. take out the chassis, check the diff, remove the driveshaft, take out the engine and oil it with WD40. lol, just joking, i have no idea, sorry

How to change spark plugs on a 51 Renault Espcae 3L V6?
I can't believe that a service item like a plug change would require engine removal, no car designed in the last 40 years should be this way. Belts, chains perhaps, but not filters or plugs.

I'm no mechanic, but my wifes Focus has a large plastic valance just in front of the windscreen under the bonnet. This would have to be removed to replace the battery for example. I suppose your car, with its large capacity, transverse engine, could have the rear bank hidden under some sort of removable cover?

Is it worth investing in a Haynes manual?

Addendum: I'm not really sure where you expect this question to go. If you've already asked a Renault tech guy, what are you expecting from anyone else?

Changing spark plugs on a jeep liberty 2003?

You didnt mention what size the engine was. If it is the 2.4L, which I have in my TJ......stupid neon enine........ You will have to remove the throttle body in order to get to the plugs in the rear of the block. Its not that hard, you need a 10mm socket and just move it out of the way. Make sure you have a GOOD set of spark plug sockets. I bought the cheapo ones at advance and the rubber grommet kept coming off on the insulator while the plug was seated...... I wised up and got a craftsman set. Do not over torque the plugs but do not under torque them either. You can find the specifications in a Haynes manual or drop $35 clams on ALLDataDIY and you will find everything you need to know to fix your ride. Its basicly a Factory Service manual with more step by step instructions.
Changing spark plugs on a jeep liberty 2003?
I think all Jeep Liberty's are 3.7L V6's so there will be 6 spark plugs. 3 on the left, 3 on the right. Start by pulling off one of the spark plug wire boots. Trace the wire back to the distributor or coil pack. Disconnect it. Connect the new plug wire onto the distributor or coil pack. Get a spark plug socket that fits your spark plug. Loosen the spark plug and take it out. Take the new plug, gap it according to specs (should be on a sticker under the hood somewhere) and thread it in. Not too tight, not too loose. Then connect the new spark plug wire to the new spark plug. Do the same for the other 5 and you'll be good! Make sure you do one at a time so you don't mix up the wires. This should take you about 30 minutes or so. Good luck!
Changing spark plugs on a jeep liberty 2003?
The best way to change spark plugs is to take one plug out at a time. Check the Gap replace it with the new one. Then put the wire back on. Then move to the next one. That way there is no way to put the wires on the wrong way. And your vehicle will run correctly.
    Not a hard task.

What spark plugs and oil filter do I need for a 1996 Corsa?

These are all required before you can source the correct part for your car. Once you have all this info, call or visit your local auto parts store and they will set you up
Pop into Halfords. They have reference sheets that will tell you what bits for what car. I also strongly recommend that you invest in a Haynes Manual (also in Halfords). It's 拢20 but will save you that many times over. If you can't afford it ask Mum or Dad to get it as a birthday pressie.

I want to see if my Crown Vic will perform better with maybe platinum plugs or something different. Anyone recommend Bosch or another brand in their Vics? Hows the performance and can you tell the difference? Thanks!
Want to change spark plugs in my 99 Crown Vic P71. Anyone have any luck or recommend a high performance plug?
Stick with the OEM Motorcraft. the long part number is AGSF-32PM, short number is SP-493, they have the extended threads to help prevent spark plug blowout. Use a torque wrench when tightening the plugs and do it when the engine is cold. torque spec is 13-15 ft-lbs.

the majority of problems we see at my dealer with running rough and misfires are caused by the aftermarket and performance spark plugs. once replaced with OEM, they run fine.

I wouldn't go with Bosch for your Vic. Stick with motorcraft and you won't have any new problem. These engine hated anything other then motorcraft.
Motorcraft spark plug called for this car is platinum and never a problem,Bosch is not a good choice for spark plug.

Changing the spark plugs and wires on a 4th generation firebird LT1 engine?

hi, i was wondering if anybody has changed the spark plugs and wires on a 4th generation firebird 5.7 liter with the LT1 engine, i have a 1996 firebird formula with 5.7 liter engine and i have been told that its kind of a pain in the butt, but i'am wanting to do it myself so if someone that has done it before could tell me the best way to do it that would be greatly appreciated.and dont tell me take it some where because i called and places want six or seven hundred dollars just for labor to change the plugs and wires and im not paying 6 or seven hundred dollars for labor when i can do it my self. so please throughly explain the whole process best way to get to each plug etc. more info the better thanks.
Changing the spark plugs and wires on a 4th generation firebird LT1 engine?
Having worked on and tore down to the smallest part engines ranging from a weed eater to a small block chevy I have amassed quite an assortment of tools, some even home made. It will take an array of tools as in socket extensions, ratchets, and universals to change the plugs. In your case some components may have to be removed to access some plugs and you will need the tools to do that. You may even need a inspection mirror to see some of the plugs, even have to reach plugs from underneath. A good manual, frame of mind, and patience will be most advantageous. Good luck.
Changing the spark plugs and wires on a 4th generation firebird LT1 engine?
thats an amazing amount of money to do plugs and wires, Your best bet, is not going off the internet, you need to buy a shop repair manual for that specific car, all the information is in there, and will have all the tricks and tips that you need.

Im changing my spark plugs but there was oil on them. do i need to get the oil out of there before i put the n

well i have a honda civic and the plugs were bad and i pulled them out and there was alot of oil on them. i went and bought new plugs but how do i get the oil out of there before i put the new plugs in???
Im changing my spark plugs but there was oil on them. do i need to get the oil out of there before i put the n
By fixing the problem that put the oil in there is the first place. A small amount of oil on the threads wouldn't be a problem, but you said a lot, and I assume coating the electrodes of the plugs. Bad news I'm afraid.

What you have is oil blow by. Normally when you get blow by one of two things are happening. First the piston rings are not turned far enough so that when the oil comes up around the skirt it'll run into the gaps and blow into the combustion chamber. The second is that the cylinder is so worn that it allows the oil to pass the rings at the worn areas.

No oil should be reaching the combustion chambers.
Im changing my spark plugs but there was oil on them. do i need to get the oil out of there before i put the n
If your have oil on your spark plugs, you have a problem. take it to a mechanic.
If the oil was on the 'outside world' end of the plug, it could just be bad o-ring seals in the plug 'wells'. To fix it, you'll need to pull the valve cover.

Not sure if Honda's are that way or not. Ante up $20 for a Haynes or Chilton's book to be sure. They're nice to have around anyway.
If you have oil on your spark plugs, you have bigger problems. More than likely the valve stem seals are worn and are allowing oil into the cylinders. The only fix is to have them replaced. Find a reputable shop and the job shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks.
you have other problems. need to compression test each cylinder that has oil present. two things could be wrong, one could be the rings are not sealing anymore from high miles, got hot a few times, or not changing the oil on schulded intervals. the other problem could be a bent push rod and or stuck valves. good luck!
Oil deposites on plugs huh? not good. Caused by excessive oil entering through combustion chamber through worn rings and pistons. Excessive clearance between valve guides and stems or worn or loose bearings. Changing your plugs with out correcting the problem will be a lose lose situation as you will corrode the new plugs instantly and your ignition system will be weak and drivability will be rough and poor.
honda engines are designed to blow up. at the very least i'd say your piston rings are worn out losing valuable compression. is there any exhaust smoke when you rev the engine up?
if your lucky you may just have a bad valve cover. was there any oil on the plug wires?
your not going to get the oil out of there, unless you rebuild the top half of the motor, depending on the miles you have on it , you may need to rebuild the entire motor, if thats the case go to advance auto and get a new reconditoined motor and thats alot cheaper then to buy a new car, but you will probably still get alot more miles out of this motor before it goes completley out

If you can see all the spark plugs and your wrench fits them, go for it. You must have a spark plug gap tool to make sure the gap on the new plugs is right. They say not to change the gap on platinum tip plugs. Careful to not drop them if that's what you're using.

1972 9.8 mercury outboard wont start, changed spark plugs?
No reason you can't maintain this engine, but you'd want to get yourself a manual

First compression test, then a spark test. use an inline spark tester set the gap at 1/4%26quot; %26amp; look for spark while turning the engine over.

good compression and spark on both, rebuild carb.

bad compression, pull cylinder head for inspection.

    no spark, troubleshoot ignition system.
Sounds like lack of fuel.Spark plugs will indicate cylinder condition...dry= no fuel, wet=too much fuel, no spark or no combustion.Pull a plug and with wire attached ground the threaded part to the motor %26amp;crank it over....if you see a spark across plug ignition is not the problem.
Sounds like the wrong spark plugs. Take out the plugs and see if the plugs haven't been smashed shut by sticking into the cyl head to far. Then look in the hole and see if you damaged the piston. If it just has a little mark on the top don't worry about it.
You probably need to clean the Carburetor, especially with that year of a engine.

Is it possible to change spark plugs on an Lt-1?

I have a 94 Trans Am V8 Lt-1 engine with distributor. The spark plugs are sort of under the exhause manifold (I think that's what their called).

It seems like a lost cause to me. I started a couple times but I never get far.
Is it possible to change spark plugs on an Lt-1?
Sometimes it's easier to jack the car up. Remove the front tires, and work thru the fender well to get to the spark plugs.
Is it possible to change spark plugs on an Lt-1?
    yes.
of course it's possible, it's just a pain in the a$$.
Don't know, don't mess with it. Take it to a shop for a tune up. At that time you should also do a fuel filter (if it is an inline filter), PCV valve, throttle body service, fuel/air system treatment, check the cap and rotor (if its not a coil set up, I can't remember on that car) and check the plug wires.
Yes but you will a special socket and extension for it. You can buy it from Snap On. You will also need an inspection mirror so you can see what you are doing. You will also need a good trouble light.

Make sure the engine is cold or you will get a few nasty burns from the exhaust manifold.

Another way to do it if you have good quality jack stands. You can jacket it up then use your jacket stands and change them from underneath the car. But again the engine has to be cold.
sounds like you have to remove the exhaust manifold to get at those plugs. or you can try looking underneath the vehicle. do you have a good socket set with extensions and such?
if you are asking that question, then you should definately take it to a shop and have a professional do it .... as for how you do it, it is a lot easier on that car to take the front tires off and go in through the fender with a ratchet and sochet with a long extension
Oh it is doable. I have a suggestion. Remove a front wheel and look at the inner fender. There may be a removable panel that will give you access to the spark plugs. Failing that see if you can reach them from underneath.

I once owned a full size Blazer. It was a nightmare changing the plugs. I had to climb into the engine compartment for 3 of them, 2 could be reached from the front and the remainder had to be replaced from underneath. Just be creative and take it one plug at a time. And never be afraid to try a different extension or universal setup. Little things like that have saved me hundreds of times.

Good luck, I hope that panel is there. I found one on a Camero once and it made my day.
yes, it is possible. I've changed them before on my friend LT1. It's not a fun job to do. The back spark plugs you use only the spark plug socket and a wrench not the racket.
With a complete assortment of hand tools, it's do-able, the worst being the #2 cyl.
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely it's doable, but plan on about 4-5 hours easily. The book time is about 2.7 hrs. I haven't done them in several years, but I remember my friend and I cursing alot. If you have 1/2 a day to a full day, give it a shot, but it will be more difficult for you since you probably don't have a lift. Much of them are removed from underneath so that will be very tough getting the correct angles. Personally, if you don't turn a wrench often, pay someone to put in plugs that will last many years.

What is the easiest way to change spark plugs in an 06 Buick Rendezvous?

3 front plugs simple and easy to change, however the rear ones are another story! Anybody have any recommendations as to how to get to the rear plugs for someone who prefers to do their own work? (nearest garage is about a 3 hour drive so no idiot suggestions to take it to one)

Gm actually makes it easy. Block the wheels. Put transmission in neutral. Disconnect the engine strut arm and install a tilting tool (http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-48260-Engine鈥?/a>

Turn the crank and it literally rotates the engine so you can reach the plugs.
What is the easiest way to change spark plugs in an 06 Buick Rendezvous?
gotta get them from underneath/need a lift
get hold of a universal swivel plug spanner with rubber ring in socket, it grips the plug when you take it out
I hated my Buick for the exact same reasons. You can't get to anything. Stupid battery is a side mount. You just can't get to anything. Checking or changing the oil was a task. Down the road she went. Couldn't get rid of it quick enough. Now that's my newer model. Love my '64 Buick Skylark. Pop the hood and there it is. There isn't an easy answer. I've done acrobatic works with that Buick. Come up from under neath? The new Buicks just suck. I feel your pain and I sold mine. Eff the hassle.
You will have to use some extensions on your 3/8%26quot; ratchet wrench and an elbow or universal joint that allows the second extension to connect to the first extension so you can allow the plug socket and the extension connected to the plug socket to stay straight while you turn your wrench at an odd angle like maybe 45 degrees.

You may need a 3%26quot; extension on the plug socket and maybe a 4%26quot;-6%26quot; extension on the wrench to clear the clutter so you can turn the wrench and back the plug out of the head. Or you may need a 4%26quot;-6%26quot; extension on the plug socket and a 3%26quot; extension on the wrench. The elbow joint or universal joint will allow you to back it out safely without breaking the plug or stripping the head or installing the new plugs cross-threaded.

Patience is the key to doing it right without boogering up the head. As long as you have good purchase on the spark plug with the socket and your extensions and universal joint are connected properly and you can turn the wrench even partially you can get the plugs out slowly, one partial turn at a time.

When you are ready to put the new plugs in the head, recommend you do one plug at a time so you don't cross your wires, put a little anti-seize on the threads of the new plug(s) and start them by hand before you connect the wrench. This way you will not be forcing the new plugs into the hole crooked and will not cross-thread the plug into the head. Tighten them down to %26quot;snug%26quot; not superman tight. I like to use electrical grease on plug boots so they are less likely to stick to the spark plug insulators so next tune-up you don't have a hassle pulling to plug wires off the plugs.

    Good Luck!

Remove spark plug suppressor, remove spark plug, reinstall suppressor. Repeat for other 11 spark plugs ( there are 2 plugs per cylinder ). The front ones are not too bad to change but the rear ones are pretty tight and you'll need a swivelling socket extension to reach them.
Can someone please tell me in details on how to change spark plugs on a mercedes 1998 C280?
take the spark plugs out and put the new ones in...
The fact that you can't even see them tells you that it's not as easy as some people think it is,,,,,,,,,,they're located in deep holes in the cylinder head. Book time to replace the spark plugs on a 112 engine is 3.3 hours. You have to remove and replace the ignition coils (all 12 of them) and it takes a special tool to remove the wires without causing any damage (the wires are $40. each).
Sorry to say. If you cant find them, have the mechanic do it. Don't go to the dealer find a smaller place that wont charge as much. You could follow the plug wires but you do need a ratchet, extender, and time. If you cross thread the plugs you will hate it and ruin the engine. Also when you change the plugs you should do the distributor and wires for plugs.

Where are you located? If in Houston TX I have a great mechanic that is cheep.

Dennis Kurk has great blue prints on where stuff is!!

  • Will changing my spark plugs increase my car's performance?

Only if the plugs in your car now are in VERY bad shape (like with a hundred-thousand miles on them). If you are asking if replacing the good plugs in your car with more expensive %26quot;fancy%26quot; plugs will increase your car's performance, then the answer is no. The engine just needs a spark, it doesn't care what type of plug the spark comes from. Platinum plugs last longer, and deliver a slightly hotter spark, but that's all. Remember this; NO spark plug manufacturer has EVER been able to prove any amount of horsepower gain with their plugs. Despite what some people on the street may claim. Tell them to show you the test results on the internet at the manufacturer's website. They won't be there.
Will changing my spark plugs increase my car's performance?
only if you have a miss
Will changing my spark plugs increase my car's performance?
Can make it tick over smoother
    yes they should do
it will ensure that you get a clean spark and therefore ignite the fuel properly but to get the full benifit you need to carry out a full service,

inspect the plugs check for burnt out electrodes get a haynes manual they show diagrams of healthy plugs to tell if your engine is healthy.
they can if there is a fault with the old plugs( worn, cracked, carbon built up, electrode missing, no plug gap at all.
Yes providing the gap is correct
oh yeah, you feel it if has been alot of miles since you changed em, also get the best ones, the ones with iridium in them or platinum at the least, more expensive, but they do work best.
changing the plugs alone wont.you would have to change the standard air filter to a pancake or induction type.also you can change the exhaust to a performance one. an oil and filter change will also help. the list of performance enhancements is endless, dictated only by your budget.
Not by a great deal depending on what ones you put in of course, normal plugs , nah, splitfires, triplesparks gives a bit more ooomph for your car.
No not really. It will give you a better spark in the combustion

chamber but won`t increase your cars performance.
    new plugs always improve performance.
Yes it would no doubt, good plugs should be changed every 20.000 miles, it will improve your fuel consumption as well.
Changing spark plugs at service intervals will not improve performance. This only ensure the your car remains reliable.

On the other hand if you have a misfire or poor starting and it's the plugs that are defective then obviously the answer is yes.

First time changing spark plugs in my '04 f150. trying to figure out exactly how many plugs are there?

My advice to you is if you haven't done this type of work before get someone to do it for you especially if its a V8. The V8 is tricky even for someone that knows what they are doing.
First time changing spark plugs in my '04 f150. trying to figure out exactly how many plugs are there?
what size engine?? It's either 6 or 8... depending on V-6 or V-8.
First time changing spark plugs in my '04 f150. trying to figure out exactly how many plugs are there?
Seriously - if you're confused with trying to figure out how many plugs there are, get some help - you really shouldn't be tinkering under the hood without some instruction.
ok if its a v-6 then it has 6 plugs if its a v8 then it has a 8. im pretty sure its not a 4 cyl.
probly 8,take the plastic engine cover off and follow the (should be bout a half inch diamiter black wires) that go to engine.
If your F150 has 6 wires going to the Distributor - it%26quot;s a 6 cylinder, and if it has 8, an 8 cylinder - so either you have 6 plugs or 8 plugs
    being a f150 it probably either has a v6 or a v8 so a 6 would have 6 and a v8 would have 8.

How do you change the spark plugs in a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?
Take the old ones out, put the new ones in. you will need a park plug socket for all of them, and if its a V6 you will need some extensions and a lot of patience to do the back ones but its not that hard.

just need to know what plug gap is really rest is the same way with any car pretty much pull a plug wire remove spark plug replace plug replace plug wire go to next plug i have a caravan getting to middle plugs kind of a pain and need a couple extension's on mine have to set socket with a short extension down in plug hole the place racket on it loosen remove racket and lift out plug sucks some but same way you would on pretty much every car

Your local auto parts store sells repair manuals. Dont change the plugs unless its necessary, if its a 2005 you should be able to go at least 80,000 miles if not more.

How do i know that i would need to change my spark plugs?

what are some signs that i would need to have my spark plugs changed without actually getting under the hood and looking at them?
How do i know that i would need to change my spark plugs?
IF it's been awhile or if the MPG are going down and the car just doesnt seem very strong.
How do i know that i would need to change my spark plugs?
You should change them about every 40,000 miles... I know the dealers claim you can go 100,000 without changing them but at that point they are in real bad shape and REALLY tough to get out! If your gas mileage goes down, hard starting, or idle gets a bit shaky that is a sign as well.
I would just pull 1 out and look at it, you don't have to check everyone. If its been over 20,000 miles, they may be due anyway
your engine seems like it running hard i had one that came out and it hit the top of the hood everytime I drove.. ,, bad gas mileage.. it could be several things.
black smoke from the pipe and the engine is running realy rough like just not normal. also just pull one out, the way it looks should tell you if you need new ones
    hard to start.....poor running....old age.....high milage.

How much to change spark plugs?

I have a 1989 toyota celica st and I am looking to put it platinum spark plugs to make it last longer. Do I have to get new wires too? How much would it be for just these two?
How much to change spark plugs?
platinum spark plugs can range in price anywhere from 2 dollars a piece to 8.. personally the brand u choose as your replacement would be the same as the wires.. yes the spark plugs and wires should be replaced at the same time to be able to adjust and operate the same as they wear as the years go by.. same as replacing oil filter along with new oil.. your probably looking anywhere in the range of 30 to 120 depending on how much your wanting to spend
How much to change spark plugs?
plugs'll probly be $20 and wires'll probly be another $20
go with iridium plugs, ngk makes them they are better. you do not have to replace your wires. make sure the plugs are gapped correctly.the ngk plugs are about 14-20 a plug. but worth it on the small amount of increased fuel economy. i didn't change the wires on my trans am.if you can do it yourself or ask some one to do it. you will get ripped off almost anywhere. i got quoted $285 to do the plugs in my trans am. that wasn't even counting the price of the plugs.
If you don't have any miss firing or rough idle I wouldn't worry about the plug wires just change the plugs but use some anti seize on the threads of the plugs. This keeps them from seizing in the threads in the head of the engine. But make sure you gap the plugs before installing them. And make sure of the torque when putting them in and not to over tightening them because aluminum heads with spark plug holes will strip out them threads.Use a torque wrench if you don't have one borrow one from some body if you can't buy one from a parts store and ask what the torque should be on the plugs.
I put Bosch twin electrode platinums in my Corolla 6 years ago and they're still good. I've ,since then , driven to Canada, Disneyland in Orange Co, Keystone Colorado and Vail Colorado, plus daily commute in the SanFrancisco Bay Area. I can talk about 60,000 miles on a set of platinum plugs and the original plug wires. Invest $10- $15 on those spark plugs and don't worry for the next 6 years at least.
If you haven't replaced the ignition wires, cap and rotor with Denso or NGK parts within the past 50,000 miles you'd better add that to the %26quot;to do%26quot; list along with Denso or NGK platinum or longer lasting iridium spark plugs. Do not attempt to second-guess or re-gap iridium spark plugs. The center electrode is so small and hard it will spall off or break if you attempt to do so.

How do you change spark plugs and spark plug wires?
one by one with a spark plug socket. good plugs are bosch. Make sure you test the gap on your plugs though.
I don't know of any website, but you can try autozone.com. They have some how-to stuff on there so that may help. I have always had good results with champion plugs. Everyone has their own preference. You will need to know the year, make and model of your vehicle (ex. 2003 Ford Escape) and the engine size (ex. 6 cylinder, 2.4 liter). You will need a %26quot;gap guage%26quot;. The clerk at the parts store can tel you what the gap should be and show you how to use it. Start of gapping all the plugs, then remove one plug wire and only one. After remove the old plug and install the new one then put the new wire on. Repeat this process for each of the cylinders making sure to remove only one wire at a time so that you don't take a chance of mixing up 2 wires and hooking the up wrong. This would cause the cylinders to fire improperly because they are timed to fire in a certain order and mixing up the wires will mess up that order and your car won't run correctly. There may be little plastic %26quot;holders%26quot; along the wires in places. If there are, make sure the new wires go into those to keep them off the hot parts of the engine. Good luck
take one out at a time and then just replace them...make sure you gap them

  • When changing spark plugs, is there any difference between the type used for fuel-inj and carb engines?

I'm doing a simple tune-up on a 1985 4wd Toyota pickup (4cyl 22R) and bought replacement spark plugs under the assumption that it uses a carbeurator (though apparently Toyota introduced fuel-injection models at about the same time) - once I returned home I became suspicious that it was in fact actually a fuel-injected model - as I am a novice mechanic and this is my first job on a Toyota can anyone offer any advice on what to look for to be sure (I don't actually SEE the carb and the truck starts without pumping first, that's what made me wonder if it was actually fuel-injection)? Will it make a difference if I use the spark plugs I was given at the auto parts store under the assumption that it was for a model using a carb? (I tried it anyway since by the time I thought it through I had already replaced all 4, and the truck started up just fine, but obviously I don't want to risk any future problems.)
When changing spark plugs, is there any difference between the type used for fuel-inj and carb engines?
In 1985 Toyota did make 2 4 cyl. engine in the sr5. One was Carb

the other was fuel injected as you stated but it was Turbocharged!

I'm betting you got it right. The Turbo trucks blew up a long time ago.
When changing spark plugs, is there any difference between the type used for fuel-inj and carb engines?
A 22r has a carburetor a 22re is fuel injected and the plugs are fine for both
carburetor or fuel injection does not affect on the kind of spark plugs, just look for an appropriate kind .
The best way to go with plugs is having all of the info on the vehicle , year, make , model , engine size , even take the vin code in to the parts store they will give you the right parts and suggest better plugs like platinum's which last a lot longer . Or remove one wright down the number off it and put it back then take the number in so they can match the part number .Know what your working on at all times .
i don,t think so. maybe just the gap might be different if even that.

Where are spark plugs located on a 2000 ford mustang?

i am familiar with the process of changing spark plugs...i have done it in many cars. but ford mustang plugs look different. so i wanted to consult it here first before i go mess with it. its a v6 and it appears that the plugs are tightly packed on the right side of the engine (while facing it). so please all answers and comments are welcome but try to be specific...step by step guideline would be awesome....thank you for taking time to answer in advance.

that sounds like you are looking at the coil pack that is the new distributer for new cars now your plug wires connect to it follow them thay will go under the valve covers on both sides.under the valve cover is the heads that is where the spark plugs are

A ranch and an 3h socket.
Depending on the spark plug itself, you will need a screw driver, a socket wrench and some gloves (if you dont want your hands to get dirty or irritated by cold/hot metal)

    1) Take the plug out of the package (Be sure it fits correctly into the required position)

    2) Be sure your car is not running while you are doing the exchange/replacement

    3) Remove the old plug from its socket

    4) Put in the new one and screw it in tightly with your hand before using the socket wrench and/or screw driver to tighten it further.

    5) Once its tight, close the spark plug box (If it has one) and make sure its secure..

    ALL DONE

ratchet , extensions, spark plug gap-per , don't over torque them down 5/8 or 13/16 plug socket
get a ratchet, a 5/8 plug socket and maybe an extension. twist the boot on the plug and pull the plug wire off but 1 at a time. put the socket on the plug and use the extension ( if you need to ) and use the ratchet and turn to the left to take them out. before putting the new plugs in make sure you gap them. run the plug in and snug them up and put on the plug wire and go to the rest of them.
get a 5/8 inch spark plug socket, a swivel adapter, at least a 6 inch extension for the wratchet, and a wratchet. you will need to check the gap on the plugs, I recomend getting the parts store to show you how, if you can find a short piece of 3/8 fuel hose you can slip it on the head of the plugs and use it to easilly install the new plugs till snug, then use the spark plug socket to tighten the plugs. they only need a tiny bit dont get to aggressive with it. I recomend using a dab of anti seize on the threads of the new plugs for future removal. the old plugs have to be removed to the left direction (counter clock wise) and are tightened to the clock wise direction
    spark plug socket and rachet
Once somebody shows you how to change spark plugs you may wonder why you thought it was difficult. In some cars it is difficult.

You need a sparkplug socket to remove and replace the spark plug. It is tight enough to keep it from working its way loose. You have the plugs. You should put antiseize compound on the threads of the new plugs before you put them in, but I use a couple of drops of clean motor oil. You should have a gap tool to make sure the gap on the sparkplug electrode is the right size. If you're using platinum plugs they say don't try and adjust their gap. They're usually right, but I always check to make sure.

Remove the spark plugs only one at a time to make sure you don't have a chance of mixing the wires up. Do the job with the engine cold, if you can.

Take off the first wire from the first sparkplug by twisting its rubber cover to make sure it doesn't stick to the plug, then pull the connector loose from the sparkplug. Next, carefully slip the socket down onto the sparkplug and loosen it. If it seems like it doesn't want to turn freely, turn it back and forth a bit, then unscrew it all the way out, taking care to not drop it while you lift it out of its hole. Take time to look at the condition of the plug. It should be dry, not oily or wet with fuel. If there is any water on it you have a serious problem with the engine. It should be brown like light coffee, or grey, but not black and sooty. Take a new sparkplug out of its box and look at it to make sure its gasket is on it and all the way off the threads. Look at the electrode and make sure it is straight. Is some clumsy clerk dropped it in the store it could be bent. That doesn't happen often, but this is your chance to be sure. Measure the gap to make sure it's not open too much or closed too much. Standard plugs can be bent open or closed as necessary. Put a drop of antiseize compund on the threads, wipe off the excess .Here's where you need to be careful: Slowly start the new plug screwing into the hole by hand to make sure it goes in straight. Make certain this is straight. Easy is right. Hard is always if it's crooked. Never force it. Screw the sparkplug all the way down with the socket, then tighten it a half to 3/4 turn more. I use a torque wrench to get it to 14 foot pounds, but that's just being very cautious. As long as its tight enough to stay in will do. Try and remember how hard the old one was to lossen and that's how tight to put the new one in. Replace the wire to the new plug, making sure it is firmly attached and you're done. Do the next plug now, the same way. You'll be glad you don't have two loose wires and wonder which plug they came off off. There is only one right way to put them, so the one-by-one method is foolproof.

If a sparkplug won't come out with your hand tools, there is a real problem you'll need an experienced person to assay. The last thing you want to do is start out with a simple job and end up having to take off the head to have it repaired. Think of the last time you opened a real tight jar. It shouldn't be harder than that. You can learn everything you need to know about doing this basic job in a Chiltons Auto Repair manual. There is very little else you would need to do with that particular engine to keep it running well. Replace the air filter and change the oil and oil filter next chance you have time, unless that's been done in the last 6 months. A good investment, however, is to buy an OBD II code reader so you can tell what's wrong anytime the check engine light comes on. It'll cost you about $100 and it just about costs double that anytime you go to the service dept to have work done. You're saving over $100 changing your own spark plugs. Reward yourself.

Does anyone know if changing the spark plugs on a 2002 Ford Taurus is easy?

The job isn't all that bad, though the plugs at the rear of the engine are a bit difficult.

Start early, while the engine is cold. Don't get in a hurry. Get in the mind-set that it is going to take a little time, but don't get in a position that you begin to FIGHT the job. It will certainly go downhill if you do.

How Do I Change Spark Plugs On A Renault Megane?? please help?

    Hi there

Hope someone can help me. I need to change the spark plugs on my Renault Megane 03 reg, as the car seems to be misfiring ive changed the coils and can see the spark plugs but how do i get to them? they seem like they are to far down to reach..Also if any one knows if there could be any other problems as to why my car is misfiring it would help. the warning engine light flashes sometimes and at low speed the car really runs bad like its going to stall but at a faster speed it seems ok. i would take it to a garage but funds are a bit low at the moment.

Thank you to anyone that could help....
How Do I Change Spark Plugs On A Renault Megane?? please help?
You need to use a spark plug socket with two short extensions, try to use the spark plug socket that has a rubber ring on the inside to hold the spark plug securely as its a long drop from the top of the engine cover to the bottom of the hole for the spark plug.

Importantly when you have all four spark plugs out, look at the condition of the ends of the spark plug as this will give a good indication of what problems there is within the engine.

All four spark plugs should look more or less the same with a light gray deposit coating the ends of the electrodes.

The plug gap should be more or less the same of all four.

Spark plug socket, 6 inch extention and a ratchet are all you need to reach the plugs. if you have changed out the coil pack you will most likely have solved the misfire problem. finish off the plugs and you should be set.
buy your spark plugs, and buy a spark plug tool at the same time, this way you will be sure your tool fits the spark plug, as there can be two sizes.

or buy a socket set ,they usually have a spark plug removal tool/socket in them.

just be careful taking them out and putting them in, usually the heads are aluminum, make sure you don't cross thread them. or over tighten them
hi there if you are going to change the plugs you need long nose plyers to get them out just loosen them as normal them putthe plyer in the hole to pull them out ,i would get the air mass sensor and the lambda sensor checked as well or go th a garage and ask them to put the computer on them it will tell you what the problem is or just get them to reset the light

    hope this helps

Using the plug that is made by Ford, which is Autolite no.5144 you would have a .054 gap. Plugs are usually pre-gapped but it is wise to double check anyway.

Is the coverter stopped up ? there isn't much to go bad in them, either stopped up or the ceramic is broken.

Mufler , well the noise is obvious.

200,000+ the converter is probably bad

The hole in the muffler is it small like a nail hole in the end at the bottom or rotted out ? Many manufacturers put a small drain in them to drain the condensate out
Changing my spark plugs and had a problem????????????
a little white is ok, though mocha brown is perfect color for plugs. excessive white deposits indicate a lean air/fuel mixture (the amount of air going through the motor is too great for the amount of fuel).

What do you mean %26quot;the muffler went bad%26quot;? most likely, the lean condition was caused by the broken muffler being less restrictive than normal, allowing more airflow out of the motor.
If the build up was not too bad it is probably from normal fuel we get these days...if plugs get off gap a little they can carbon fowel or get that same build up...and no...they cannot really make converter and muffler go bad...how many miles and what kind of car ?
The white condition on your plug, is an indication of a lean air/fuel mixture. That will cause the cylinder to run hotter than normal, the extra heat may have caused your muffler to get too hot and it could have destroyed the inner baffles, the same for you cat converter.

    good luck.

I am changing my spark plugs on my 2001 gmc sierra.?

My truck just reached 100k miles and I am doing a tune up. A few people have told me that buying the spark plugs and wires at the dealership is the only way to go. Supposedly I will get the best performance from the factory a/c delco products but they are expensive. Is there really that much difference?
I am changing my spark plugs on my 2001 gmc sierra.?
Since the factory parts lasted you this long, you might as well stay with them as long as there are no other major mods going on. As for the price, you don't have to get them from the dealer. You can get AC Delco parts at any auto parts store, you may have to wait a day or two for the wires to be ordered, but they should have the plugs in stock. The price will be significantly lower at a place like NAPA than at a dealer, and the parts are exactly the same.

I did a tune up on my Ranger last month. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv valve and all filters were from Motorcraft-Ford oem parts. The total parts cost was less than $100.00. It took my local auto parts store overnight to get everything in, but, they did it.
I am changing my spark plugs on my 2001 gmc sierra.?
Actually I disagree with the first two answers. I prefer the Bosch Platinum +2 spark plugs. They have two points at the end of the plug which results in better fuel ignition and they require no gapping. As for the plug wires, I go with a slightly better set for better performance, however a standard set of any brand will do.

I also would not go to the dealer but to a local auto parts store. The dealer will just overcharge you for getting the exact same parts.
it cost me a little bit over $200 to put all ac delco on my 99 blazer v6 from local part store. i got new dis. cap, rotor button, wires and plugs. you will have to get the platnium plugs thats what comes factory. i tried the other brands in previous chevy autos and never had any luck. the autolite plugs would foul out and the other brands just didnt seem to cut it. as high as as gas is i would put in ac delco to keep the performance that u have.
In general I would say that since you have gone 7 years on the originals I would pop for the GM brand just for the confidence it will give you. If you get something else and they don't work right then you will have spent a lot of time and extra money for nothing.
the AC Delco are all that I run in my truck!!!

Do I need to remove the fuel rail to get at the spark plugs? I have the 4.6 Litre V-8. Thank you.
How do I change spark plugs in a 2000 Lincoln Towncar?
    no
How do I change spark plugs in a 2000 Lincoln Towncar?
If you aren't familiar with basic auto maintenance, I'd recommend you have an experienced buddy help with the job. A miss aligned plug(always turn'em in by hand 2 full turns) can ruin the threads. Good luck =^ )
this isnt a job for a beginner-take this to boys at the lincon dealership
It does make it easier to remove the fuel rail then remove the spark plugs. It is a pretty simple task. You should be able to do it on your own as long as you know how to turn a wrench and don't over tighten them.

How do you check , and change, spark plugs in a 2000 Dodge dakota?

I want to do a little maintenance on my truck, and save money in the process by not taking it to a mechanic. Can anyone give me detailed intructions to do the spark plugs? I'm new to working on engines..
How do you check , and change, spark plugs in a 2000 Dodge dakota?
It's very easy. Remove the spark plug wires. Then, using a special spark plug socket (you can get this very cheap from an auto parts store) remove the spark plugs and replace them with new ones. Then put the wires back in the same way you took them out. Done!

How do I change spark plugs on a 02 Jetta 2.0? Is it relatively hard?

I own a 2002 jetta gls and at 40k, the spark plugs need to be changed. I would like to know what the steps are to change them and if it is a hard job to conquer.
How do I change spark plugs on a 02 Jetta 2.0? Is it relatively hard?
    Buy the replacement plugs first.

I am guessing you know how to get to the plugs, so i advise u to make sure the engine is cold, say first thing in the morning. Never pull plugs when motor is hot or at operating temperature as this can sometimes have a negative effect on an otherwise easy job.

Ok so motor is cold u have access to spark plugs and the needed tools; Remove the spark plug lead dont just pull on the lead try to gently use the insulating boot around plug the black rubber bit closest to the spark plug, before undoing the plugs try to tighten the spark plug a very little amount as this seats the thread on the plug, once plug has been tightened fractionally undo plug and insert new plug into same location.

When inserting new plug try to get the thread to bite by screwing it in with your fingers if possible, that is until you have to use the ratchet. At this point i will advise that if the plug isn't going in as easy as it came out then STOP and make sure you are not cross threading the plug. Just undo it and start again.OK so finger tight, good; Next using the ratchet tighten the plug firmly, i cant help u here as this is usual done by feel. If u remember how hard it was to take out the plug then this is a good indication of tightness needed.

    Make sense?

That's about it, continue on with process until all plugs are changed.

Change one plug at a time and take note of where it came from, then lay all plugs in sequence as per removal. Take note of any irregularities of the plugs. On removal of first plug compare electrode gap and correct new plug gap if needed, usually not as spark plugs gapping is not really an issue on modern cars (anything with a computer in it.)
How do I change spark plugs on a 02 Jetta 2.0? Is it relatively hard?
Wait ten thousand more miles and get a mechanic to do it. Jettas' are worse than Jaguars on repairing them and cost.
You just need to pull your plug connectors and have a plug socket and rench its quick and easy. The only part to pay attention to is when you use the new ones make sure you have the tool to set the proper span between the gap. Should be found online.
Fairly easy repair. Just remove the engine cover and you should be able to see the plugs on the front of the engine. It helps if you have a swivel spark plug socket, b/c you have to work around the intake manifold.

How do you change spark plugs on a 98 rodeo?

I would like to tune up my car myself my step father showed me how to change spark plugs and i don't remember please explain the easiest way if you can how to do a tune up including oil change and any suggestions on what the best oil would to be use to clean out your engine I really don't know how to word it but hopefully someone understands what I'm trying to ask THX!
How do you change spark plugs on a 98 rodeo?
you don,t use motor oil to clean out the engine, you use motor flush. as for the plugs you will need a 3/8 ratchet and spark plug socket and maybe an extension
How do you change spark plugs on a 98 rodeo?
Change them one at a time, pull the spark plug wire off one, remove and replace the plug and put the wire back on and move to the next one, making sure you have the wire on snug and tight on the plug,(make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly B-4 starting. If you are changing the distributor cap and rotor be sure to mark your wires so you know where they go into the cap, or your car may not start. For an oil change, crawl under the car, place a container that can hold at least 5 qts. under your oil pan drain plug and remove the plug, opening your filler cap will help it drain quicker. After it has drained all out, use a filter wrench and remove your oil filter, put a little oil on the rubber gasket on the new filter and put it back on your car by getting it hand tightened and using the wrench to tighten it another 1/4 turn. Put your drain plug back on your oil pan and tighten.

Fill your car up with required amount of oil, maybe 4 qts first if it takes 5, start your motor to circulate the oil through the motor and filter, turn it off and add the remaining quart. You might want to change your air filter also if you have a new one.

5w-30 or 10w-30 should be right for the oil.

SPARK PLUG GAP....every car has a certain amount of gap in the plug to make sure it fires at its optimum...here is a link that may explain better along with some other useful stuff. Find out what the gap is for your car from where you bought the plugs and they can tell you and even check it for you.

    Here is the link: http://www.ehow.com/video_2326846_set-sp鈥?/a>

BTW....you don't need a torgue wrench to replace the plugs, just a ratchet wrench, a spark plug socket(rubber gasket inside the socket), and an extension. tighten it , just don't over tighten it.....as shown in video.
    To add to it:

Remove the oil filler cap first before draining the oil. I know it's very rare that one can't open it, but it'll be a big headache if you drain the oil and then can't fill it.

Know the a torque setting and use a torque wrench.

Double check on the spark plug's gap.

Consider using a little anti-seize on the spark plug. Some have a coating on it already, some people don't use it. Just consider it.

How often should i change spark plugs?

i have a '02 corolla -- should i change my spark plugs at the 60k mile checkup/maintanance? what else do i need to do at 60k miles?
How often should i change spark plugs?
plugs for non platinum change then around 30k for platinum plugs anywhere from 60 to 100k, at the 60k service the trans, oil change every 3000 miles unless you use synthetic then around 5000 to 6000 miles. coolant service, injector cleaning, pcv every 15 to 30k, fuel filter every 15k.
How often should i change spark plugs?
change spark plugs every year regardless of mileage, normal servicing annually although i would change oil %26amp; filter every six months
check your owners manual for maintenance schedules. It will tell you there what they recommend. I usually don't go over 60K however. The manual will tell what you should do or should have done. Make not of whether you are %26quot;normal or severe%26quot; service. Most people fall into the severe category.
your spark plugs should be changed every 45,000 miles...every 10,000 miles you filster need to be changed(fuel filters)....
Depends, are they platinum or standard resister plugs, platinum should last 75 - 100k miles with little or no wear, resisters should be replace every 35k. Also, use only import style plugs, i.e. denso, ngk, for your Camry. all others may give you grief later on.

I found out I had water in my gas tank a few weeks ago. I use the solution to get rid of it but I am still hearing the clinging noise. Now I find out I need new spark plugs to get rid of the noise. Is this expensive? Any other way to get rid of that clinging noise?

    Do it yourself = $12

    Mechanic = $150
How much does it cost to change spark plugs in a 2003 Nissan Maxima?
you can do it yourself for cheap. they only cost like $10 and you just need a socket wrench that matches the size of the plugs
i own a shop, and if you have it done ,parts and labor all together will run you around 40 bucks for this, and please have then use a good spark plug back in it, go with an ngk or a Bosch plug, don't settle for anything less, good luck hope this helps.
Depending on whether or not you're having a dealer doing the work, you can more than likely buy your plugs at a local autostore such as Autozone and have them check the correct gap/clearence for you.

While the installer may not be responsible for the part unless they sold it to you, they are to be responsible for the labor!

Save yourself some money and do what you can yourself..
Spark plugs range from $1-$3. You will need one for each cylinder. You also need a special socket with a rubber fitting (5/8 or 13/16). This should cost you no more than $35. This job is easy to do yourself, and if you go to a shop, you will pay at least $65 just for the labor.

It seems extreme, but a shop goes by the labor manual not the actual time. There is one job that I can do in under an hour, but %26quot;books out%26quot; at over seven. Guess which one is charged?
that seems about right, everyvan in the world is a literal ****** to work on
Feel good. I'd pay it and be happy. You got a good deal if the job was done right with good parts.
it hard to get at the plugs in most vans but i cant say its a good price i would have done it for half of that

How do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?

98 Windstar 3.0L V6 (12 valve Vulcan). I need to know how to change the spark plugs. The front 3 are easy to get out but how do I get at the back ones/ Also I'm changing the wires, any help would be great.
How do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?
You need to pull the intake cover off, but don't undo the fuel rails. Get all the hoses secured out of the way. You should be able to reach the plugs that way, but you won't be able to see 2 of them. Use a mirror, a good light, and an offset pivoting head ratchet and 16mm deep socket. If there is visible debris around the plugs, blow it off before starting, and give the plugs a good spray of penetrating oil an hour before starting to remove them. Be extremely careful, because in the awkward position you'll be in, it's easy to break an old plug (not a devastating situation, but a pain just the same), or you could cross thread a new plug and strip the threads in the head ( a terribly devastating and expensive situation).
How do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?
never worked on a winstar. you might try getting to them from under the car, there's more clearance there sometimes, other than that just squeeze back there and pull them. Definitely change the wires ONE AT A TIME, this way your sure to get them in the right firing order. so change a plug then the wire that goes with it. not all at the same time. good luck
i think it would be helpful to take off the intake manifold
Remove the front wheels and go into the fender well. You will need to remove the cover and you can see the spark plugs.

Ugh! Don't you know they make it so you can't change the spark plugs on anything anymore? I think you will have to disassemble the entire car to access them. Good luck.
How hard is it to change spark plugs on a 2000 Pontiac Montana?
Pull your plug wires out one at a time. and by one at a time, I mean pull one wire, replace the plug and then replace the wire. If you pull them all off and then forget where each one goes, well, you can figure it out.

Changing spark plugs when its cold? is it a bad idea?

i heard that they could crack so need to know before i do it
Changing spark plugs when its cold? is it a bad idea?
You are actually supposed to change the plugs when the engine is cold. Metals swell when heated and the plugs will be more difficult to remove when both the head and plugs are hot, and harder to install when the plugs are cold and the heads are hot. Snapping the ceramic on the plugs usually occurs when the socket is improperly placed on the plug, the plug is struck, or if the ratchet is ****** while turning. Sub-zero ambient temperature may make the ceramic more brittle, but I am not sure. I have changed more than my share of plugs in cold weather and have never had such a problem. Use care and all should be fine.
Changing spark plugs when its cold? is it a bad idea?
depends how cold. But normally it is ok to do. Better then burning your hands on a hot engine.
Not a bad ideas. Spark plugs can crack when its hot too.
Who ever told you than, I want a double of whatever they were drinking. Of course, the spark plugs will crack. It is from when you grab one with cold hands and it slips and falls down on the cement and cracks. Of course putting spark plugs in -200 degree weather will definitely crack them, especially when you go to tighten them.
not, it's ok to change while it's cold.
So repair shops in the north don't replace spark plugs in the winter? And you could warm the engine up by starting it. I would warm the engine to %26quot;luke warm%26quot; (just enough to keep my hands warm while removing the plugs) and then back each plug out a half turn. Then spray penetrating oil around the threads. Later, tighten and loosen each plug (back and forth) until you can remove them easily. I wouldn't remove the plugs from an extremely hot engine without letting it cool down some.
it is better to change the plugs when cold but not in the freezing cold
    dude change your plugs.
They only crack if you tilt the socket and put pressure against the ceramic, if you have the socket on straight you will be fine.
how are they gana crack u dont turn them from the porceline i hope

  • 02 maxima Changed spark plugs and car will not start?

I have an 02 nissan maxima with 126000 miles on it. I just changed the spark plugs on it the other day and started it up and it sputter for a little bit and then everything started running normally. I drove it to my cousins house which is about 30 minutes away and the car was driving with great performance. I get to my cousins and let it sit for about 20 minutes and then get ready to leave and it will not turn over. It tries to start for about 8 seconds and then finally turns over. I rev it up and notice that my RPM gauge is not working. I turn it off and turned it on again and hold the key to the start position for another 8-10 seconds and it turns over but there is no throttle response and it turns off.

I took everything off and checked the spark plugs to make sure they were secure and i also checked the spark plug wires. I have never had problems with the car. I also used the same exact spark plugs that were in the car before.

    HELP!

    Thanks!
02 maxima Changed spark plugs and car will not start?
Nothing related to spark plugs will prevent the engine from turning over. I would look very closely at any connectors you might have had to undo to replace the plugs, make sure they're fully connected and tight. Methinks you have a loose connection or possibly a damaged wire somewhere.

How are 2003 Ford Expedition spark plugs numbered?

We need to change the spark plug %26amp; coil wire on #3. Problem is - how do we know which is the # 3?? A friend changed what he thought was the number 3 - but the numbering must have been misinterpreted, because it wasn't the 3. Changing spark plugs is like our monthly maintenance on this beast %26amp; I hope once this one gets done it will settle down...thanks
How are 2003 Ford Expedition spark plugs numbered?
Scullycj is correct about the way the cylinders are numbered. Cylinder #3 is the 3rd cylinder from the front on the passenger side. Or interpreted another way, the 2nd cylinder on the passenger side from the firewall. If changing spark plugs seems like monthly maintenance, you obviously have other issues causing the miss. One last, but very noteworthy to mention tip. Use ONLY Ford/Motorcraft spark plugs and other electrical parts in order to avoid headaches. Doing this job more than once is probably no fun as you already know. Hope this helps.
How are 2003 Ford Expedition spark plugs numbered?
    You're Welcome.

Passenger side starting at the front going backward. 1-2-3-4 Drivers side starting at front and going back. 5-6-7-8
If it is a straight 6, the front plug is #1 and the rear is #6. If it is a v8, the plus number 1-4 on the right side and 5-8 on the left side. The cylinder number should be cast on the intake runner to that cylinder. At least they used to do that.

Changing plugs on 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara?
Remove 2 Phillips screws holding down the plastic covers on each valve cover. Under the covers will be 3 C.O.P.'s ( Coil On Plug) disconnect the wires to each and remove screws using a 8 mm socket with extensions and ratchet as needed. Twist and pull to remove coils from the spark plugs. New rubber coil boots can be obtained from any parts house. Spark plug removal is now the same as any other vehicle. They are platinum plugs. If you find oil inside any of the spark plug tubes then you will also need to plan on doing valve cover gaskets, this is a MUCH bigger job!
Changing plugs on 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara?
3 on the right side of the engine, 3 on the left. Between the cam covers on each bank of cylinders, almost directly beneath the edge of the big plastic housing on top of the engine. A good socket set, with a couple of U joints, and it should be an easy job.
You will have to remove the plastic cover to get to the spark plugs of both side. YOu won't see spark plug wire, but small electrical wires coming out of each.

I would go with original NGK, Denso or Bosch platium

  • Why do you have to disconnect the negative battery terminal when changing the back three spark plugs?

On an oldsmobile cutlass supreme (1989) why does it say to disconnect the negative battery terminal for the back three plugs? The side mounting battery terminals are difficult to access and none of my socket wrenches fit in that small space. What could go wrong if I skip the step of disconnecting the battery?
Why do you have to disconnect the negative battery terminal when changing the back three spark plugs?
you can get a power surge, spike, get a good shock ect...
Why do you have to disconnect the negative battery terminal when changing the back three spark plugs?
I don't know the car, but my guess is it's a safety precaution, either to protect the electronics in the car or prevent the mechanic from getting an electric shock. I suspect this is one of those cases where some foolish person got an electric shock and then sued the manufacturer. I can't see why you couldn't just disconnect the positive terminal, but personally speaking, it never occurred to me to disconnect either when doing spark plugs. You should remove the car keys from the ignition before starting just to protect yourself. If the battery terminals are within range of the socket wrench, I would ensure they are covered as a precaution.

do 1 plug at a time. use antiseaze on the new plug threads, ONLY!!!gap your plugs using the veci sticker under the hood use high quality O.E plugs ( Toyota specific) dont over tighten them 14 to 18 foot pounds is plenty. also dont forget the dialectric grease for the spark plug boots.check your other stuff to pcv valve fuel filter air filter and by all means chage the oil to your truck will love you.

make sure the engine is cold if you dont the sparkplugs will strip the holes

How do you change spark plugs?

In my pontiac grand am, I'm told that spark plugs are very easy to change (well, in almost any car they're easy). But could someone give me very straightforward directions just to make sure I don't screw it up? I know I need a spark plug puller (though I don't know what to do with it), and a socket wrench, which I have plenty of sizes and attachments for. I'm just looking for step-by-step. Thanks!

here is some advice... do it one plug at a time. Remove the old plug, and put in the new one before moving on to the next plug. People often disconnect all the plug wires at once and then get confused which wire goes to which plug. If you do it wrong you could do some damage to your motor and it definately won't run properly.
Gap the all plugs first, the spec should be on the sticker under the hood. Then remove the One spark plug boot by twisting and gently pulling or you will ruin the spark plug wire and remove that plug and replace. Do this procedure one at a time until all plugs have been changed.

It is straight forward. Take the sprak plug wire off and put the socket on the spark plug. Unscrew it and pull it out. Put another one in and tighten it. Do them one at a time so you don't mix up the wires. If you put the wrong wire on the wrong plug, the engine wont run correctly.

Dont get the plugs too tight and be carefull when taking the plug wires off. If they are old, they may break.

A spark plug puller is basically a socket with a piece of rubber in it to grab and hold the spark plug.
on those grand-ams you have to take the top off that goes on the engine and the plugs are down in there. you will need a long extension and a 5/8 socket and ratchet. make sure you gap them before installing them.

  • Changing spark plugs ,do you need to gap the plug, or put in as they are? if so how do you gap them,?

They should be gaped to the proper space. They work better.

Usually you use a gapping tool reaqdily available at auto parts stores. Most have different size pieces to measure the gap size and a U shaped cut out to fit over the outer electrode to bend it out or in to set the gap to proper size.

So measure, if too much space then bend outer electrode in towards centre and if too little then bend the outer electrode out to proper space.

most plugs come pregapped but a gapper is good just to make sure.

    check them for gap

you can do this with feeler gauges the distance will be in your handbook
old or new car, it takes only a few seconds to properly gap your plugs. It is a cheap insurance for proper ignition.
    Yes, please gap your plugs.

The gap is what is causing that spark and making your car run smoothly.

You can buy a gapper at Walmart, cheap.

if in doubt, have a shop do it. its important.
My husband is an auto parts store manager. He says you need to gap them sometimes. You buy a tool for that at the auto parts store. It looks like a coin and the end varies in thickness in order to gap plugs at different sizes.
u should gap them but in the real world most just look to see its not been droped...some platnum plugs shound NOT b gaped as it chips the platnum,
Spark Plugs come with an ideal gap for that plug, changing the gap could cause weak spark, missfire, high fuel consumption etc..................just put them strait in but be carefull not to over tighten as they do crack and break......should be finger tight then just nipped up!!
They are close out of the box, but gaping them only takes a few seconds for each one. The tool is cheap.

There are some more expensive plugs that are pre gaped.

As the spark plug gap has an impacts performance, just do it.

If they are two narrow you spread them (that is why I use a tapered gage), and if they are to wide I gently tap them on the inside of the fender well to close them.
Buy the exact spark plug manufacturer and part number specified for your engine. Before you accept the plugs, make sure they're gapped to the correct specified gap. You don't want to have to attempt to regap spark plugs. You may damage them even if the damage isn't obvious, especially for the new high technology spark plugs. Don't buy any spark plugs that aren't already gapped properly!
no !spark plugs must be gaped to suite the engine their going in for best performance. they may work with out setting gap but starting and fuel economy will be sacrificed.gap them as per the auto Manuel,if no Manuel use a match book cover it,s pretty close to what the Manuel will tell you ,works in a pinch if you don't have feller gauge to set proper gap.
    most plugs come pregapped

if youre gap is off the high voltage will not arc across the space and there will be no spark

if there is no spark you will be wasting A LOT of fuel because none of it will burn it will just go in the cylinder and go out you will clog up your exhaust because of all the liquid fuel you will have horrible performance because no combustion horrible gas mileage and maybe even a fire from the fuel touching your hot exhaust system and igniting
Most come pre-set but you should check them with feeler gauges before fitting them in case they have been set wrong or in case your car needs them set different to the default gap.
Today they ll come pregapped. You can check them but I have found that they are good to go out of the box.

It is a good idea to check them as they could have been damage in transport.
you need a feeler gauge, it a bit of kit that has several fingers made of metal that are different thicknesses..and when you set the gap they will slide into the gap you have set...you can buy gap setting tools...
they need gapped and you can get a plug gapper for little to nothing at the parts store and they will even show you how to use it.
