How to change spark plugs on 1998 gmc safari?

I want to tune up my van so I took off the housing covering the engine inside my van and I can see the plugs but how do I get to them to change them?
How to change spark plugs on 1998 gmc safari?
A good assortment of tools. Some you can get to through wheelwell, some from underneath, and some from inside of van after removal of doghouse.

  • Husband changed spark plugs now truck won't start!?

we have a 98 ford f150. My husband is very knowledgable about vehicles. He just changed the spark plugs, and now the truck won't start. When you turn the key it just %26quot;clicks%26quot;. He tried cleaning the battery terminals. He said he didn't touch anything else. Anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong?

    God Bless!
Husband changed spark plugs now truck won't start!?
Has he accidentally knocked the small wire on the starter solenoid
Husband changed spark plugs now truck won't start!?
dead battery from having the hood open too long.
Sounds like the battery is dead. Have him Jump start the truck. And then Fully Charge the battery.
Dead battery or a bad ground is most likely culprit.

Check battery voltage first at battery and then at starter.

Also check ground at the same two locations to make sure battery is grounded to frame and engine .
Just changing spark plugs didn't cause the problem.

Leaving the door open or the radio on, did.

Get a jump start, or charge the bettery.
either what the above people posted or he knocked a wire off somewhere, start at the starter , and work your way up
Changing the plus would have nothing to do with it not starting. Another problem has developed. Check battery for charge, starter, etc.

My sister took her ford scape to ford dealer they charged her $500.00 labor for spark plug changing!?

Is $500.00 fair price for changing spark plugs on a 2001 ford scape

V-6? they say they need to remove intake manifold in order to that? has my sister been overcharged? if you are a mechanic or know about this things please advice! you help will be greatly appreciated! thanks.
My sister took her ford scape to ford dealer they charged her $500.00 labor for spark plug changing!?
What is the labour rate at the dealer where your sister took her car? Ford Platinum plugs cost about $20 each. $20 times 6 equals about $120. That leaves about $380. Yes, in order to access and replace the back three plugs requires the upper intake to be removed. With a labour at about 3.5 hours at $100 per hour, that adds up to $350. Add $350 plus $120 and that equals about $470. This leaves about $30 for whatever taxes are, where you are located geographically. That being said, it sounds about right. So in answer to your question, NO your sister hasn't been overcharged by the sounds of things. Hope this helps.

There are domestic cars that, when using a transversely-mounted V-6 (engine turned sideways), have almost no room to get behind the manifold. I had a 1990 Chevy Lumina that in order to get to the rear spark plugs, you had to unbolt the engine mounts up front, use a pry bar to rotate the engine toward the front and then tie it down with tow straps. That was right out of the Haynes repair manual! A total pain!

As for the Escape, check the link down below; it's a picture tutorial on performing the job on an Escape. The main thing to note is the author saying, %26quot;...isn't a really difficult job, but can be quite time consuming.%26quot; I don't know how long %26quot;time consuming%26quot; is, but the dealership is going to be charging something like $90/hr. Does it take 5 hrs? Hmmm...I don't know about that.

You might go to a local independant shop and ask them how long the job takes. Shops don't punch the clock when they work on your car, they go by a flat-rate based on how long the factory determined a job would take. They may be able to justify why it cost that much or debunk it altogether.

Note: Appears that I and the poster above me where writing at the same time and grabbed the same article! Gotta love it!
The v6 Escape - like many other sideways mounted V6's, are very difficult to access the back side of the engine - and to complicate the matter, often times the intake manifold covers the back side and makes access impossible without removing the intake. It's ridiculous - and it demonstrates the designers total ignorance when items that are subject to replacement are buried in some inaccessible area - heater cores in a great many vehicles come to mind (typical part $100 - average labor $400+)
They are correct in that the intake manifold does have to be removed to change the spark plugs on the Escape, you cannot reach around the engine, they are actually under the intake manifold. Here the platinum plugs are only 7 bucks each, and figure in new intake gaskets, I would not want to reuse the old ones. What was the hourly labor rate for the dealer? Here it would have been around 300 for the entire job, depending on the labor rate, you may have been overcharged. If they charge 100 an hour or a little more, it may be close, if less than that an hour, your sister got taken for a ride unless they did other services with it as well, such as an induction service and oil change, etc.
I don't know about this specific vehicle, but if I can charge 500.00 on book time for changing 6 spark plugs in anything on this planet, then I'm in the wrong business...

I think she got hosed down big time......

How do I change the spark plugs in my 1996 Saturn wagon?

I tried to change my plugs in my car 1996 saturn station wagon, but I could not find how to take the old plugs out! I pulled and pulled but they would not release. How do I get them out? Please explain this to me with as if you are drawing me the picture. Thank you!
How do I change the spark plugs in my 1996 Saturn wagon?
remove the four wires on the top of the engine. pull up and twist. remove plugs, gap new plugs, place plugs in hole, tighten them up, and reinstall wires. good luck!
How do I change the spark plugs in my 1996 Saturn wagon?
The same way you take out the plugs on a 97 Saturn.
u need a 3/8 rachet with a 2 inch extention and a 5/8 socket to remover them ........righty tighty ,and lefty loosey
A ratchet preferably 3/8 and a socket that would fit it, they usually sell them at a auto parts store. Remove one and put Antiseize around the threads of the new one, put it back in and tighten down. Do not break the porcelin of the spark plug. Put the wire back on top. Do one at a time so you don't mix the firing order.

O2 SENSOR,FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER
94 accord sputters %26amp; less power even after I changed 4 spark plugs?
    plug wires maybe
the fact that you have oil in the plug wells should be a sign. a valve cover gasket kit should come with a new set of seals to replace the failing ones on this valve cover. i would imagine that you have an excessive amount of oil in at least one of the wells. oil around the plug will provide a path for the spark to jump causing the spark plug to short out essentially.

If you buy a used car from a dealer, will they usually change the spark plugs?

Its a 1999 Subaru Impreza Outback, with a 2.2L H4, and it had 72,000 miles when I bought it from a chevy dealer. Now it has 73,000, should I change them anyway? Do dealer's usually change the spark plugs?
If you buy a used car from a dealer, will they usually change the spark plugs?
you kidding, usually not, that costs money...
If you buy a used car from a dealer, will they usually change the spark plugs?
    Some do... most don't

It's always a good idea to change your plugs if you question them... replace them, that way you know it's done, and at what mileage.

    - Good Luck!
pull one out and look. they probably wont do that putting extra expense and taking from there profit. Yes I would change the plugs and just as important change the wires too.
They don't spend any money for the customer if they don't have to.......change them yourself.......Hope this helps.
Spend the $20 and do it yourself. You'll feel better.
dealers try to get the most out of a car while putting the least into it.......because you have no idea if they were changed I would definitely change them and note the mileage so you can keep up with your maintenance.....P.S. the dealer in all probability did not change them.......
very rare will a dealer change plugs especially if the car is running ok, i would replace them but you may find it hard to change the plugs with a normal plug socket due to space with the engine being a flat 4, i have a special tool which i bought from subaru when i had my wrx cost me approx 拢20
no way unless it miss firing and eventhen usualy not
LOL, I really doubt it. They're not a charity after all. They'll make you feel like you're in their debt if they even change the oil.

I was gonna do it myself, dont really have time. wanna make sure i dont get taken to the cleaners.
What is flat rate to change spark plugs on a 06 trailblazer with a 4.2?
2.2 is book time for S engine 2.0 for H,M,P engines. Look at 8th digit in your VIN and that is your engine code.

Also keep in mind you have the right under law to have them show you the listed labor time in their labor guide they use.
What is flat rate to change spark plugs on a 06 trailblazer with a 4.2?
$20 is what i charge. if the back spark plugs are difficult to get to, the dealership or shop will probably charge you a lot more. shop around is what my advice.
I charge 拢50 a plug plus B%26amp;B for a week and return 1st calls air travel from London. If you find it cheaper grab it. Have a nice day.
Ford charge $111.00 to change spark plugs.. Yee Gods, I nearly killed the wife!!!

I would have changed them them minutes for nothing.
Flat rate? You'll have to call the garage to get a quote. How could anyone here know what the various garages charge wherever you are? Alaska? Alabama? Leeds?

How Do You Change the Spark Plugs on a 1998 S10?

We need to change the spark plugs on the 1998 S10 LS it runs rough and hesitates to start. We tried looking we can see the spark plug wires but cant get the the Spark Plugs they are hidden under the AC Unit we don't know much on cars Other than adding fluids Charging the spark plugs and the battery. How do we access the spark plugs WITHOUT disconnecting anything on the A/C Unit?
How Do You Change the Spark Plugs on a 1998 S10?
Most of them are accessible through the wheelwells. You should take it someplace and get it done for you. One of the plugs is tough to get out with household tools only.

1998 murcury villager i must change spark plugs how many plugs do i need
Changing sparkplug how many plugs do i need on 1998 murcury villager?
    It's a V6, so six.

To be frank here - if you don't know how many spark plugs you have (or how to figure that out), I highly doubt you have the knowledge/skills to work on the car yourself. You'd probably be better off to pay someone to tune it up for you.

Good luck changing the three closest to the firewall.
Changing sparkplug how many plugs do i need on 1998 murcury villager?
How many cylinders is it? 4 cyl needs 4, 6 cyl needs 6, and 8 cyl needs 8.
If you do not know the size of your engine, you will need more advice than how many cylinders you have. With a Villager, I'm sure you have either a 6 cylinder or 8. Find your coil pack and count the number of wires it has. Each wire connects to a spark plug. I would say to count your spark plugs but some are hard to see.

Once you determine whether you have a 6 or 8 cylinder, you will need to find the %26quot;gap%26quot; setting for your plugs. Your Auto Parts Store should be able to tell you. You can purchase a small guage to set your plugs to the proper gap. Some people believe that when the buy plugs that are for their vehicle, that they are already gapped. NOT SO.

Another point. No doubt you probably have aluminum heads. If so, do not remove and replace your plugs until your engine has completely cooled off. Do not remove or replace plugs in a hot aluminum head. Also be sure you get the wires back on the correct plug.

Since you believe you need new plugs, also check out your wires.
it could be 4,6, or 8.count the wires or call auto parts and tell them the size motor you have it will be wrote some where under hood by front of van
You need 6 plugs, a spark plug socket, a 6 inch extension and a ratchet. You may need a wobble extension or universal joint for the 3 plugs in the back. You'll also need to do one plug at a time because if you remove all the wires, you'll have no idea where each one goes without a repair manual or marking the wires. Just do one at a time and avoid problems. Good luck, if you have to ask how many plugs you need, you should probably get some help on this job.
mercury villager? it,s probably a V6 so it will take 6 plugs. a 4 cylinder will take 4 plugs and a V8 will take 8 plugs.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer spark plug changing?

I have heard this can be a tricky model to change the spark plugs on. Can anyone explain to me in detail and maybe provide pictures on where the spark plugs are and how to access them?

    Thank you!
1996 Chevrolet Blazer spark plug changing?
It is easiest to change them if you remove the front tires. There is a flap of material that you can lift up and put your socket and extension straight in. The hardest part is getting the plug wires off. The #1 cylinder (front driver's side) is dang near impossible to get off without a $25 special tool or removing the steering shaft. The shaft isnt too hard to get off, there is one bolt you have to remove and the shaft slides off steering box. Just be careful that the steering wheel doesnt rotate (it should be locked) or you could cause damage.
1996 Chevrolet Blazer spark plug changing?
patients is the key word, just be careful not to pull off vaccum lines or all the other stuff crammed in your way. take your time, replace one at a time located on side of motor. purchase an auto repair manual for this model blazer at an auto parts store, has pictures and help walk you through this step by step procedure. Good luck and the manual will always come in handy for any other do it your self stuff on the vehicle.
It Isn't any harder than a normal car or truck to change your Blazer plugs. They are in the same place as in other cars or trucks.

Changing Air filter and Plugs raise gas mileage?

I was told from a few different people that changing the Spark Plugs and Air Filter on my '03 Toyota Rav-4 would significantly raise the gas mileage. I'm getting around 22 MPG, and I'm pretty sure that I should be getting more. Is this true?
Changing Air filter and Plugs raise gas mileage?
I can鈥檛 say for sure that it would significantly raise your gas mileage but it will definitely improve what you have, but only by a fraction. You are not going to see gains of three MPG, but you might see one or two if your filter was pretty dirty.

    Good luck

    B
Changing Air filter and Plugs raise gas mileage?
They would ONLY raise the gas mileage IF they were old and worn. If you have NEVER changed the air filter or you live in dusty area (like farm area), they changing the air filter would very much help.

As for the spark plug, newer cars often use Platinum or Iridium plugs that last up to 100K miles. So your spark plug might not need changing.

    ===

Every time gas prices goes up, local stations do a story on gas mileage. Recently they test how much new air filters, plugs, proper tire pressure, clean trunk, etc. all helps. It turns out they all ADD up to only few MPG. It turns out that the BIGGEST difference is from driving habit change.

Jack rabbit starts (quick accelerations) are the worst, and driving on cruise controls are the best. They can improve your gas miles as much few MPG to 10 MPG (or more) improvement (depending on the weight of the car).

    Good Luck.
Not only replace the plugs and air filter, but replace the plug wires as well. Keep the oil changes inside of 3K miles and remove any and all excess weight (junk in the trunk) from it.

Oh, check your tire air pressure and tire wear. Also keep your foot out of it. Drive smoothly, don't accelerate hard and start to slow for stops waaaaay ahead of time.

And... yes you can see as much as three mpg improvement.
Well, it depends if the air filter and plugs were worn out and old... Better change the air filter, spark plugs and wires, and drive smoothly. You can see that there's an improvement in gas mileage.
Your driving style adds to your fuel economy too you know. Check out my source below to see what you can do and see if your doing it right for better MPGs on your vehicle.

How difficult is it to change spark plugs on a 1994 Tarago?

If you have never done it, Very difficult. if you have some experiance it's fairly easy. the most difficult part about it is some people have the habbit of removing all the plugs and wires at once. Then they forget how it all goes back together. just do them one at a time removing one wire and plug. Then putting the plug and wire back in. Move on to the next.

if you have the correct tools and remove the plugs when the engine is cold and do one at a time, not to hard to do. it's just a bit fiddly..

Do you have to pull the head on a 2004 Ford Taurus to change the spark plugs?

I have changed the fuel filter %26amp; it was full of rust. This stopped the sputtering at low speed 4 about a week. Think it probably needs changed again. While I am doing this for my friend I was going to change the spark plugs. I don't have access to the car right now it is in another state, %26amp; before I buy spark plugs I was wondering if anyone could tell me how hard they are to change.
Do you have to pull the head on a 2004 Ford Taurus to change the spark plugs?
No you do not have to take the head off.

They are fairly easy to change also.
Do you have to pull the head on a 2004 Ford Taurus to change the spark plugs?
Typical V6 FWD vehicle - the back plugs are somewhat of a hassle but not anywhere near as bad as some vehicles. You shouldn't have any problems if you've got access to some decent tools.
u shud b able to do them with no prob
dont know the F/T but ford v6plugs arnt that bad the best things to do it with is a good make3/8 drive socket %26amp; extensions you will have more room to work with 3/8 than 1/2. get an assortment of lengths of extensions.
The best way to change plugs in this is to pull the right side windshield wiper box . It takes 3 bolts that are 7/32 of inch and 3 clips . This makes it easier to get to back plugs . I do a lot of Taurus repairs and this is the best way to get your hands back there . If it is a DOHC motor you have to pull the upper intake if it wraps over the plugs . Have not changed a 2004 DOHC so I am not sure but on the 2001 you have to . Good luck and this is about a 2 hour job taking your time less on the 12 valve Vulcan motor . Do not get frustrated it isn't all that bad .
No need to remove head, the back cylinders are a bit of a pain to remove and replace plugs in , but straightforward job. Change that fuel filter also, it will always help, if the last one was plugged you can be sure it will be doing it again.

  • My car is choking i change spark plugs and it still does the same?

one of my spark plug wire is not reciving power i change the wire for all of them and its still does the same thing choke but when i pull the plug on onbe of the plug there is no change but to all of the other plug when i pull the plug its choke even worse

replace the distributor cap and rotor if it does not have that then replace the coil pack.
My car is choking i change spark plugs and it still does the same?
    check your fuel filter
get a new distributor cap and rotor
one thing you have crossed a plug wire,it fires but not when the cylinder is on top.you need to check the air flow and the timing .goodluck
depends on what type of motor but inspect the distributor cap and rotor and if the contacts don't look too marred or corroded put it back and change fuel filter. then ask new question if there is still trouble
if that particular spark plug is not grounded properly, it will not spark, pull the plug and clean the mating surfaces thoroughly

i haven't viewed 'em, so i will tell you some things that can go wrong.

you can break one off in the hole iffin' you don't get a proper angle with the ratchet/socket.

you can pull the boot off the wire if you don't do it right.

you can strip the threads going back in if you don't thread it right or if the threads on the head are not clean giving you a false angle when threading. or over torque them and strip the threads.

i spray the threads of the new plugs with WD-40 prior to install. Loctite庐 anti-seize product is also popular.

    i must be slippin'........
get a 5/8 spark plug socket, gap the plugs as specified by your owners manual, or you can call autozone or advance auto parts and they should know... unscrew your old ones, and BEFORE you screw the new ones in put anti-seize on the tread... if you dont you could potentially damage the cylinder heads..
word of advice. when working on your car and you dont know what to do it usually ends up being cheaper and easier to bring it in to a dealer.

I changed my spark plugs and wires and now the car sputters and runs sluggish.94 4runner?

I recently changed the spark plugs and spark wires on my 94 4runner 3L v6. When I started the car it ran sluggish. Whenever I would accelerate, the car would make this sputtering sound. I thought it was the plugs and wired so I bought new ones. I put the new ones in and it still has the problem. Im not sure what the problem is but it didnt do it before I replaced the spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap. Does anyone have an idea on what it could be?
I changed my spark plugs and wires and now the car sputters and runs sluggish.94 4runner?
You could have gotten some moisture in the distributor cap or you have an incorrect plug gap. Additionally, verify your wires are in the correct firing order. You may have a timing issue so check timing.
I changed my spark plugs and wires and now the car sputters and runs sluggish.94 4runner?
Most likely a spark plug gap issue. Did you check the gap before installing? Sometimes they're on the money right out of the box, but not always. Each plug fits many different models, so the gap can be different.

Well, If your asking this because you can't get to the 3 in the back of the engine, then you need to remove the coil packs and you should be able to get to them that way. If you still have trouble then you can remove the intake if you want to just keep up with what you take off and where it came from.

I have a 1999 Lexus ES300 and i was wondering how to change the back spark plugs on it? Also i was wondering on how to change the spark plug wires? If there are any websites which have pictures please post them. I went to a mechanic and they told me that it would be around 150 to do the job. Thanks
How do you change the spark plugs on a 1999 Lexus ES300?
The mechanic's price is too much, you can easily change the spark plugs by having a spark plug remover. Instead of paying 150, use this to buy yourself a spark plug remover. If you wish to change the wires, simply pull the black rounded terminals and they come out easily. You must change all four spark plugs to ensure smooth combustion on all four cylinders. Changing new spark plugs will only require 20-30 minutes.

What will happen if i put spark plugs in my 1997 jeep cherokee with 217,131 miles on it?

yea. my jeep cherokee is a 1997, with 217,131 miles on it. i believe the spark plugs are bad on it cuz the engine churps a lil to get it started. i went to general mufflers and got the correct spark plugs; autolite 985.

just wondering if their is a setting to put them in at and if i need to change spark plug wires along with the spark plug change.
What will happen if i put spark plugs in my 1997 jeep cherokee with 217,131 miles on it?
there should be a sticker in your engine bay that says the correct spark plug gap so you might need to buy a gapping pliers. Also a simple test for spark plug wire voltage leakage is at night start up the Jeep and spray a light mist of water on the wires and if you see %26quot;spiderweb%26quot; arcs they must be replaced
What will happen if i put spark plugs in my 1997 jeep cherokee with 217,131 miles on it?
If you put in the right spark plugs and gap them properly, your engine will run better. New spark plug wires will help a bunch also. If the sticker hasn't been peeled off by now, there is usually a sticker under the hood somewhere that specifies spark plug gap, ignition timing, etc. Be careful to not crack the porcelain while putting in the plugs. It's kind of easy to do and the engine will run like crap.

return those plugs to the dealer, you got robbed, plugs shouldn't cost more then $2 apiece unless they are platinum or gold or something

Spark plugs changed and gas mileage started to dip?

I changed my spark plugs with bosch platinum 2 about 4 weeks ago.

I calculate the mpg after one tank of gas, roughly one week or so.

First week after change, I registered my mpg to be 36. That is almost 10% better than the old plugs

Second week, it down to 35 ish. Third week was 34 ish. and this week is 34.

What is going on ? Shouldn't the plugs lasting for a long time ?

Do other people has similar experiences ?
Spark plugs changed and gas mileage started to dip?
bosch plugs are a real good plug it you last a long time did you set the gaps on your new plugs and did you put new spark plugs wire on went you changed your spark plugs

did u gap them right??? my guess is u didnt set them right before u put them in.

  • What size socket wrench do I need to change my spark plugs on an 1997 Dodge Ram Pickup?

I have to change 8 spark plugs in my truck, I have the tools to do so, I'm just not sure what size tools I need to use to get the spark plugs out.
What size socket wrench do I need to change my spark plugs on an 1997 Dodge Ram Pickup?
They're all 13/16 or 5/8, so just buy both and you'll always have the one you need.
What size socket wrench do I need to change my spark plugs on an 1997 Dodge Ram Pickup?
Not really sure. But a good guess would be 13/16 %26quot; if not that then 5/8%26quot;. Good luck.............: )
5/8 plug socket. And run over to dodge and get a new wire set for it. You'll need em after stressing the crap out of the old ones to remove from plug.
    when you buy the plugs walk over to the tool aisle and try it. but i suspect it is 13/16%26quot;

What might cause a 94 ford explorer to chok while idling after spark plugs are changed, new oil and air filter?

my truck will start fine but it slows like someone is choking the engin. just changed the spark plugs and new air filter with an oil change. new alterniator. so yeah i cant seem to find the problem? could my timeing be off? well thanks.
What might cause a 94 ford explorer to chok while idling after spark plugs are changed, new oil and air filter?
First off, make this a little more clear, did it have the problem before you did the work? If so and this is what you were trying to fix, it sounds like a bad idol air control valve. If the problem was not there before, make sure all the plug wires are installed correctly, all your vacuum hoses are intact, No wires unplugged from mass air flow sensor and such as that. I dought very seriously it is the timing if it hasn't been tampered with. Also, DO NOT attempt to adjust the idol on this vehicle, you will screw it up, it is factory set and no need for adjustment.
What might cause a 94 ford explorer to chok while idling after spark plugs are changed, new oil and air filter?
When I ran into the first %26quot;idol%26quot; in your post, I thought it was a typo but the second occurrence has proven that you are an ignoramus, and should not write unless your life depends on it!

    It's %26quot;IDLE%26quot;, dummy.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Probably one of the vacuum lines was accidentally disconnected while changing the plugs and filter.
I don't know what you mean by %26quot;choke while idling%26quot; If you mean it slowly stalls out it could be the idling needs advanced a little or you might want to check the timing (it is a part of the tune up.) Check timing first.

Now that the plugs have been replaced and air filter changed it may be running so good that the clogged fuel filter can't keep up with the new demand.

Start with timing, change the fuel filter, then check the idle.
Have you changed the fuel filter? When you go to the parts store let them look it up to make sure there is only one. It is usually one in the fuel line running from the back to the front, I think it was under the driver on my dads 94 F150, but make sure there isn't one also under the hood in the engine compartment...
Are you sure the spark plug wires are connected correctly?
You have a mass air flow meter concern this is what controls the fuel since it meters how much air is entering the engine

Why would my 2001 pontiac grandam 4 cylinder not start after changing the fuel filter and spark plugs?

check to make sure you have all th wires on tight and ran to the right plugs
Why would my 2001 pontiac grandam 4 cylinder not start after changing the fuel filter and spark plugs?
I believe that you did not replace the coilpacks with the tune-up, which I have found to be required, Why you may ask ? Resistance changes.
Why would my 2001 pontiac grandam 4 cylinder not start after changing the fuel filter and spark plugs?
    hmmm couple possibilities.

Got wires on plugs in wrong place. Check placement

    Air lock in fuel filter.

    out of gas.

you do need to replace coils thats rediculous, unless they were the problem to begin with
In some cases it possible to install a gas filter wrong but I think you've probably either air in the gas system line or the wrong gas filter or spark plugs or spark plug gap. There is probably a bleeder valve on the vehicles fuel rail that much looks like a bikes air valve that you can use to bleed the unwanted air out of the gas system. Check for this valve unscrew the valve bleeder cap and use a small screw driver etc to push the valve inside down and see if air comes out of it then try again to start it.Double check your air filter , spark plugs , PCV valve and the spark plug wire connections and make sure the spark plug wires are connected good and connected to the right ignition coil contacts and spark plugs too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.
First off, does the engine crank at all?

I am going to assume the engine cranks- check the fuel filter to make sure it was put in so match the flow of fuel to the engine (some fuel filters will not let gas reverse direction and flow back to the tank).

Another possible problem on the fuel side of it is that the engine may not be able to pull fuel through a dry filter, so you may have to prime the fuel lines with fuel and try again.

On the sprak plug side, how did you replace the spark plugs- is it possible the firing order was mixed up? If the engine's plugs are out of order, the engine would not start and at best would achieve a couple of puffs before dying.

To tell you more I would have to know what happens when you try to start the engine.

Let me know if you need any help!
several thing can cause it not to start. it could be the fuel is,nt reaching the injectors. maybe the fuel pump regulator is bad. also maybe it,s spark instead of fuel, like module or coil. also check the pump fuse and the fuel pump.

Why would my 2001 pontiac grandam 4 cylinder not start after changing the fuel filter and spark plugs?

Dead engine..no oil, outta gas... a pipe fell off, ignition broken,, u need a new car, ur car is crappy....lots of things it could be.

ACDelco Rapidfire Spark Plugs feature an electrode system that can revolutionize your engine's performance. The splined, multi-point center electrode and extended ground electrode with a tapered center are what produce better combustion, smoother idle and faster starts. Set of eight.

    You will need Socket Driver

    3/16 or 5/8 deep socket

    3%26quot; and 6%26quot; drive extensions

Swivel adapter for the driver allows for tight spaces

Does changing usable spark plugs save gas?

my friend noticed i get 10mpg in the city and suggested i change my spark plugs, since i changed oil/filter and air filters. having bad spark plugs can cause misfires, but i dont know if my car is misfiring at all. should i change the sparks? or how can i tell if its misfiring?
Does changing usable spark plugs save gas?
As said to your other question, you do not have a misfire.
Does changing usable spark plugs save gas?
No, but you can improve your gas mileage by buying the crappiest, cheapest air filter you can find.

Newer engines (1996 forward) dispense fuel based on how much air is entering the engine.

Shoving an old sock in there (whatever have you) is called %26quot;cupping the engine%26quot; and forces it to conserve fuel to avoid running rich.
    For regular copper plugs:

Every 20,000 thousand miles change spark plugs

    For Platinum plugs:

Every 50,000 thousand miles change spark plugs

    For Iridium plugs:

Every 100,000 thousand miles change spark plugs

Yes you can get better gas mileage if your plugs are working correctly.

    Good luck.
^^ yeah, pull them out and read their condition. You could be running rich, that maybe a oxygen sensor problem(if you have one). One of your injector maybe leaking(if you have one).

The spark plug's condition can tell you what is going on.
Because of cityc driving and low mileage I would say yes change them It sounds like you don't drive a lot, get out on the higghway and run it up to high speeds it's good for it once in a while.
Without knowing how old the current plugs are, no one can answer this question. However, spark plugs are cheap for most vehicles and it certainly wouldn't hurt to change them...
Only way to know is take em out and look at them

How much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. It has 102,000 miles on it and I'm wondering roughly what it should cost to have the spark plugs replaced and have my transmission fluid and filter changed. I live in LA.

    Thanks
How much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?
Josh didn't mention changing his transmission filter so, add about $20 or so.

Yes, you %26quot;have%26quot; to have the plat. plugs or else your Check Engine light will come on.

The Plat. plugs are also why you got 102k out of your first ones.

Not sure about the LA area but, 6 plugs at about $15 a piece is normal - plus labor if a garage does it.

[Plus beers, if I do it... :) ]

[[Correction, %26quot;plus beers as I watch you do it and I supervise.%26quot;]]

Total should be less than $200 if you do it. $325ish if done at a shop.
How much should it cost to change the spark plugs and replace the transmission fluid/filter on a Grand Prix?
Considering, it's a 2002 with that many miles i would also have the spark plus wires replaced. Get the platinum spark plugs.

I had my done by the dealer for about 85 dollars.

Also, I changed the fluid myself. The fluid is expensive for this car type. You need type IV.

I used Castrol and it took 4 quarts costing 6 bucks a piece.

So your looking at about 125-150 bucks if you do the tranny fluid yourself.

Just want to have a rough idea of how much labour time I can expect for the mechanic too change my spark plugs.
How long should it take a Mechanic too change the spark plugs in a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan w/ 3 Litre V6?
usually around an hour ,if nothing goes wrong ,but i have had some of those that would take longer because the plugs are really hard to get out sometimes, and a good mechanic wont try and force them out,he or she, will get them loose then use a penetrating oil to help them come the rest of the way out,it once took me over two hours to get a set out so be prepared just in case, most of the time on a 3.0 they come out fairly easy though, good luck.

it takes a bout an hour if he is slow so just u can judge around that
    try it and see
Just say 5 to 10 or more mins per plug especially if he has all the right tools and knows the engine well.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd not want to just do the plugs on that vehicle one thing you could do or have a friend or mechanic do is disconnect the spark-plug wires one by one at the ignition coil , take a wire brush and sandpaper and clean the connectors and be sure to dust off the sand afterwards. You might find by just doing that the engine starts to run better most ppl don't do that at all and have sever bad corroded or rusty connections on their ignition modules.
1 hrs more then that the mechanic is stealing your money!
actually i have that engine in my car and they should charge u around 5 hours (that's the book time) or less depending on how good the mechanic is because they have to pull off the intake plenum which is where the back three plugs are.

Why won't my car start after I changed the spark plugs and distributor cap?

First I sprayed a degreaser on the engine and hosed it down. I then changed the spark plugs and distributor cap. I went to turn it on and it would not start.
Why won't my car start after I changed the spark plugs and distributor cap?
YOU SHOULD HAVE TURN ON YOUR ENGINE FIRST AND LET IT RUN UNTIL ITS DRY THEN CHANGE YOUR PLUGS AND CAP I HOPE YOU DIDN'T SPRAYED WATER ON YOUR DISTRIBUTOR AND ALTERNATOR COZ IT WILL KILL THOSE PARTS N E WAYZ TRY DRYING IT OUT AND MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DISTR...cap is dry too and make sure you put the right plugs and tighten those up.... ok? hope this will help you......
Why won't my car start after I changed the spark plugs and distributor cap?
you could have water in the dist. cap.

did you accidentally put the rotor on facing the wrong way?

and make sure all the wires are connected correctly?

is it trying to start, sounds like i t hits on a few cyclinders

    or non at all?

did you put the rotor back in?
The wires in the cap aren't leading to the correct fireing order, if the rotor button hasn't accidently struck a terminal inside the cap. Pull the cap and make sure none of the discusting degreaser hasn't loused up the points or ignition module.

what about the rotor, did you get it on right? do you have the plug wires on right? you said you hosed it down? probably you got water in the distributor.
This is too little too late. Tinkering has rules and one rule is do one thing at a time. Like, start engine to see how it is running. Then clean the engine and start the engine again. If it is okay then replace spark plug wires and then start engine etc. This way when something goes wrong it is narrowed down. At this stage there colud be many things from water in the electronics spark plug wires or coil wire mislocated or loose or spark plug gap. Other posts cover other things that could be wrong.
    ck a couple of things,

    1.moister in the dist.base

2.make sure the wires are in the correct spots

3.make sure the plugs are gapped to the correct setting, most of the times you buy plugs, they say that they are pregapped, but by the time you get them, they are not.

  • Is it ok to change spark plugs and wires if?

i gotta drive about 45min to my friends house with my car so should i let the engine cool down before we change the spark plugs and wires on the car or it dont matter?
Is it ok to change spark plugs and wires if?
You MUST let it cool down COMPLETELY.

Your cylinder heads are almost certainly made of aluminum, which is soft to begin with. It only gets softer as it gets hot. Plus, hot metal expands so you're plugs will be in tighter.

Taking plugs out of a hot engine can strip the spark plug threads. Let it cool completely before you begin.

Be sure to use some anti-seize on the threads as well, to help reduce the chance of having damaged threads next time you do the job.
Is it ok to change spark plugs and wires if?
would be the best idea to be taking out spark plugs while the engine is 200 degrees..

    let it cool down
I don't think you have to let it cool down, but your engine block is gonna be hot and touching it will burn you. Only time I would suggest a warm engine for basic stuff is cleaning the engine bay and oil changes.
It will certainly make it a lot easier. After a 45 minute drive, that engine will be hot. Working over a hot engine is not fun.
Don't bother buying new wires unless the original ones can be proven to be arcing. It is a waste of money. Most OEM wires can last for the lifetime of the car they are installed in. One reason to allow an engine to cool before removing plugs is due to the difference in materials between the aluminum alloy in the head, and the plated metal in the spark plug. If you are not using Bosch Platinum wire, Fusion or Nippondenso Iridium or Twin TIp plugs, you are wasting your time. Because you engine will not produce full power, lowest emissions, and best economy. Use Gum-out spray to clean your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE and throttle body prior to installation of new plugs. This will leave unwanted carbon material on the OLD plug tips, and not on the new ones!!! Good Luck!!!

I pulled the cover off were they should be and there is a spring and an electrode type thing, Where are the plugs?
Does anyone know how to change spark plugs on a 99 grand am?
if its a v6, have fun. you probably have a coil over each plug. remove that coil and the spark plug is right beneath it.if u have a v6, youll need to remove the brackets between the top of the engine and the front of the car and pull the whole motor forward with a ratchet strap to get to the rear 3 plugs.
Does anyone know how to change spark plugs on a 99 grand am?
Knowing the engine configuration and size would be helpful.
You shouldn't have to rock the engine to get to it...like others said, you might have to remove the coils to get to it. If I were you I'd spend the $20 and buy a Haynes manual for your specific car, it has loads of helpful info.

Can you damage your engine by only installing 4 of 6 spark plugs?

I was changing my spark plugs but got lazy and only changed 4 of 6. The other 2 are old and dirty and fouled with bad wires. Can this damage my engine? What does it do to the engine?
Can you damage your engine by only installing 4 of 6 spark plugs?
it defeats the purpose , it still runs sh..ty brake down and buy a couple of plugs
Can you damage your engine by only installing 4 of 6 spark plugs?
It may misfire %26amp; set off the check engine light. But I think lower gas mileage would be the most likely result. Find a good mechanically inclined friend to do it %26amp; buy him/her a few beers in return.
It could seriously damage the engine if these old two were not firing properly. You could end up with fuel pooling in either of the two cylinders and have a catastrophic engine failure if it does fire. Although if they work fine but are just old... just forget it.
yes it will cause it to misfire and use on 4 cyclinder instead of 6. Dont be lazy and fix it
What was the point of doing a half of a job? It won't run as well. It's like changing the oil without installing a new filter.
itll misfire, lower gas mileage, make your engine run rough, and if it stops firing, gas will build up in the cylinder and detonate. possibly destroying your engine. change all 6 lazy a$$. its really not that hard
what your kidding right. well ok lets see if you needed to go 100 miles but your car got lazy at about 60 miles would you break down crying cause you have to walk the rest of the way. that's like you asking me for a ride to the doctor and i tell you yeah but leave your butt half way cause i got lazy. dude your car takes you where ever you want to go when ever you want to go the least you can do is treat it good and keep up with what it needs. i hope you ride a bike and the chain gets lazy and breaks half way into your ride.
while the chances of catastrophic engine damage is low, two misfiring plugs can cause the catalytic converter to fail before its time due to excessive fuel running into it. it can also cause the computer to read a rich mixture, and that will cause the computer to pull fuel out of the mixture, and that can cause detonation problems due to the lean mixture, which can damage an engine.

do yourself a favor and get everything right.
runs bad and overloads the cat convt/good thinking
not really but its kind of like washing your butt and putting on dirty under wear why do half a job

With the 4.6L SOHC V8, you change each spark plug wire one by one. There are two coil packs. On each coil pack will be numbers corresponding to the cylinder it fires. The firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Be sure to use the proper Ford/Motorcraft plugs and wires, even if it costs more. The ones on the passenger bank of cylinders are tricky to access, so take your time.

  • How do i know which spark plug wires go to which place when changing my spark plug wire on my 99 chevy tahoe?

My new spark plugs wires dont have numbers or anything, how could i possibly tell which one is which? and do different spark plug wires have different powers?, i would assume so, since they are different lengths.
How do i know which spark plug wires go to which place when changing my spark plug wire on my 99 chevy tahoe?
You change ONE at a time and match up the length of the old with the new as you go. Remove one end of the wire and follow it to its destiniation, disconnect it, match it up with the new wire and install the new wire. Move on to the next one and repeat until they've all been changed.Do not remove them all from your engine at once. Change them one at a time so you dont mess up the firing order.
How do i know which spark plug wires go to which place when changing my spark plug wire on my 99 chevy tahoe?
They do not have different powers.

Best way to change them if not familiar with this job, is to take them out one at a time and replace with the new one of like length, that way there should be no confusion.
Your in luck, your distributor cap has numbers on the top of it (1, 2, ... 8), so you know which plug to hook to which location.

The cylinder (plug) numbers are laid out like this on the motor:

    8 7

    6 5

    4 3

    2 1

    Bumper

So when you look at the motor, that is the layout.

You can easily remove all the wires at once, because of the numbers on the top of the cap. Then match up the plug wire length and install the new wires.

I fool-proof way is to remove and replace one plug wire at a time! Then you know what you removed so you know where to replace. Just use the same length wire as you removed.

The different lengths are just lengths, it has nothing to do with the amount of power supplied to the plugs (virtually anyway. If the wires were REALLY long they would have a larger resistance and reduced power to the plugs, but you don't need to worry about that).

I changed spark plugs and wires in my 97 ford mustang. Why is the check engine light still on?

Could it be the coil/distributer cap combo? I have duel exhaust and my catalytic converter is glowing red on one side. Could this coil/cap cause this? The gas is burning richer. It actually sounds like a harley on the one side. Bad misfiring.
I changed spark plugs and wires in my 97 ford mustang. Why is the check engine light still on?
The %26quot;Check Engine%26quot; light will come on for stupid stuff some times. It could be a serious problem or it could be something as silly as you did not secure your gas cap properly. Only a service center that has the correct computer diagnostic equipment can reset the Check Engine light. You may need to see your local dealer.
I changed spark plugs and wires in my 97 ford mustang. Why is the check engine light still on?
stop driving it and get it checked by a pro... nobody here can diagnose a running problem... we can only suggest throwing parts at it and maybe someone will be right before you go broke.... cheaper and easier to take it to a very sharp technician who comes highly reccomended by other ford owners in your area.
Sounds like an HO2 sensor. (an oxygen sensor) You have two before and two in the catalytic converters.
maybe the catalyic convertor is plugged up with corrosion, its illegal to take them off. but alot of people do. one way u can tell is you will smell something funny. also you can get those little diagnostic plug in computers for like 40.00 and it will help you figure out whats wrong.
A BAD O2 SENSOR AND CLOGGED CAT. CONVERTER.THE MISS FIRE MAY BE DUE TO MOISTURE IN YOUR DIST. CAP,ALSO CHECK THE CONNECTION OF YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRES ONE MAY BE LOOSE.
This sounds like it could be one of many possible things, from a bad distributor to something as simple as having a couple of plug wires on the wrong plugs. Take it to a mechanic; they can diagnose it in a few minutes and give you an estimated cost to fix the problem. Don't guess at the problem. Good Luck
You prob have a bad misfire on one side, or like you said fuel mixture, but you would have to read the code to know, take it to autozone, they will read it for free, then put the code here to find out what to fix! If your cat is glowing, you prob shouldnt drive it til thats taken care of. Did you change the timing lately? possibly firing out the exhaust?
When the computer stores a trouble code it will not go away be itself. It must be cleared. Go to Auto Zone and they can read it for free to see if the plugs were the problem..doubtful, but if so they can clear the code or tell you what is going on to find what is setting the code.

Don't spend any more money until you find out what that code is for.

    Good Luck
Probably need to buy one of those hand held devices for reading the codes to see what the computer is telling you.

Check to be sure the spark plug wires are correct, could be mis firing.
Places like Autozone will often let you use an OBD2 scanner for free.

Get the code, then you may be able to find out what's wrong.

A little history on the car, sometimes from a cold start it'll turn the engine, but not start. Some clicking sounds come from the ignition/column area that I'm not familiar with. The car runs fine, a little slip between 1st and 2nd, but no major running problems.

When changing the spark plugs......is it ok to not change the plug wires?

yes it is ok not change the wires, as long as there were no problems before you chaged them. and also make sure you get all the plugs back on right! easy way to do this is one plug at a time.
When changing the spark plugs......is it ok to not change the plug wires?
if the wire was just recently replaced.....but if not....u may need to replace them
When changing the spark plugs......is it ok to not change the plug wires?
It's OK as long they are not showing any symptom of bad engine performance.

Or if they dint have any sign of detoration( cracks).

And also if you don't damage theme when you change the spark plugs.

If they have high mileage on theme and if you want to be in a safe side GO ahead and change theme _ As long you can afford to change theme
Yes, most times they are not replaced, I would say every 100k to 150k they should at least be checked out.
sure, use plug pliers to remove plug wire boot turn it a little bit first then pull straight off, if plug wires are very old look under the hood at night without a light and see if they glow this could give an indication of an open plug wire anyway I dont always follow the owners manual or a parts man they just want your money, put a dab of anti-seize on the threads it'll ease replacement next time on plugs
    Yes that's fine
yes, but they should be changed at 60k
sure you can just change the plugs.

How do I change the spark plugs in my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer?

My boyfriend and i would like to change the spark plugs our self and I was just wondering where they are located
How do I change the spark plugs in my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer?
you never mentioned the engine size.

The inline 5cyl and 6cyl engines have the spark plugs located on the valve cover....UNDERNEATH the coils. This is a coil-on-plug system.......one coil per spark plug.
How do I change the spark plugs in my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer?
You should have 4 or 6 spark plugs in your vehicle depending on how many cylinders you have. Assuming you have a 6 cylinder, there should be 6 black that a visable as soon as you open your hood. At one end of them they should connect to what's called your distributer cap, which distibutes the spark. Follow those wires to the other end and they should run to your block, which houses your 6 cylinders, or 4. Where the wires meet your block, if you just pull them off the block your plugs should be right under them. If you already have the new ones, you just simply remove the old ones, pop in the new ones and place the wires back on. Now if your replacing the plugs because they are old you might want to replace those wires going to them, as well as on the the other side of the wires, your distributer cap. This will ensure a great start up, especially in the winter.
Best way to go is to buy a manual from your local auto parts store for 13 bucks along with some spark plugs for that particular year and model, then head home and read up on it first..the manual will expain step by step how to go about it.

Sometimes you need to use a dielectric grease on the plug wires.

The plugs need to be set at a certain gap setting.

They need to be tightened to a specific tourq.

Plus possibly more, depending on the year, make and model.

Dont be discouraged, there are just alot of details, Hope this helps.

I bought the plugs and am debating whether i should change it myself or go to a cheap mechanic.

Replace the ignition coil of the affected cylinder which flashed the check engine light, spark plug replacement will not fix it,have it scanned to see which cylinder misfired first.
How to change spark plugs on a 99 crown vic police. detailed pictures please?
The spark plugs will not be effected by the spark plugs very often but under extreme cases it's possible. If you haven't put the plugs in a car before you might as well pay for it. You can cross thread the plug into the head (very expensive) of more likely brake the plugs ceramic insulator.
If you don't know how to do it correctly, i would do the right thing and have someone that kows what they are doing, it will save you money in the long run.

If i installed new spark plugs incorrectly, will it change the fuel effecincy?

I just changed the spark plugs myself and i noticed my car is burning more gas than it used to. Is it because of the spark plugs? thanks!
If i installed new spark plugs incorrectly, will it change the fuel effecincy?
If you installed them with the wrong type of plug or the wrong gap on the plug or mixed up the wires or cracked the plugs, using the incorrect spark plug socket (without a rubber grommet in it) or haven't pushed the wires on properly,

    YES.
If i installed new spark plugs incorrectly, will it change the fuel effecincy?
    It is possible.

If the plugs weren't gapped properly, they might not be creating a hot enough spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture properly/fast enough.

Possibly the plug wires are now damaged. Sometimes damage to the wires is not visible, but still can have a serious effect on the efficiency of the ignition system. If the wires are old, simply moving them can cause damage.

If they aren't tight enough or the threads are stripped, it can cause a leak and loss of compression.

The wrong type of plugs can cause efficiency problems.
I Doubt changing your spark plugs would have any negative effect on your gas mileage. If anything it would be more likely to enhance it. I would suggest getting someone who knows how to install spark plugs properly to make sure you did it properly. Its not a hard job, and only takes a few minutes, but doing it incorrectly can affect many major parts of your engine.
wherever you bought the plugs ask them about the recommended gap for your plugs. In Autozone it shows that on their computer.
I was going to say what everyone here has already said

How do I replace the spark plugs on a 1989 Firebird?

HI, i have a 1989 Firebird 305 v8 5.0L and was wondering how exactly I go about changing the spark plugs on it?
How do I replace the spark plugs on a 1989 Firebird?
Should be pretty simple. Find the correct size socket to fit the plugs. Pull off one spark plug boot and remove the plug (righty tighty lefty loosy). Take the new spark plug and set it to the correct gap. Put the spark plug in and tighten it to proper torque. If you don't have a torque wrench just get it snug(you do not need to crank the heck out of it). Put boot back one.

Repeat for all of the 7 other plugs. Remember only remove one boot at a time because if you mix up were the wires go then the firing order will be off and it won't run right.

This is the first time. I think the dealer will charge me a fortune. Would I be able to do it myself ? I am a bit of a mechanic too. This is a 3.9L engine with 10500Kms on the clock.
How do you change spark plugs on a 2006 Impala LTZ?
i think either you skipped a digit in what you typed or you are trying to replace the plugs very prematurely. the plugs in moist newer cars are not due to be replaced until 75000-100,000 miles. if you insist on replacing them still, locate the coil packs, remove them, and the plugs should be just below that .

How do I know when to change the spark plugs on in my car?

I just bought a 1999 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport (its a mouth full!) about five months ago, and I was wondering since I have no idea what the previous owner had done for maintenance, how do I know I should change the spark plugs?
How do I know when to change the spark plugs on in my car?
What he said.......you should change your plugs every 70,000 miles or so. And I believe on a Subaru it's a boxer type engine so they're probably pretty easy to change out....i would recommend Bosch Platinum +4's because you don't have to gap them....just screw them in and go. Hope this helps.
How do I know when to change the spark plugs on in my car?
When in doubt, change it out.
Usually you can get about 100,000 miles on them before they need changing. It's 9 years old and probably close to 100K. Spend the $20 for new plugs. Also, if it doesn't already have synthetic oil in it I would switch to full synthetic and a new filter. As so as the oil starts to turn dark it's time to change the filter. Don't change the oil as synthetic will outlast the life of the vehicle.

The car should last you a long long while
anytime you buy or trade for one like that its best to just go ahead and change everything and make a record of it ,then you know when it was done, the previous owners may not have changed those in a while so i would go ahead and give the car a tune up,and then you,ll have accurate records of when it was done,i always do,and never have any problems from most of my trades, they should be changed about every 30 thousand miles, but unless you got a real good maintenance record with the car id go ahead and tune it up real good ,change all your filters and check all the belts, anything that could cause future problems that looks bad id go ahead and change it now,it may save time and money later on ,good luck with it.
if da car trembles but change them anyways your gas milage will go up
they arnt hard or pricey go ahead and do it.

How do I change 2001 ford windstar spark plugs?

I want to change my spark plugs, (Ford wants to charge me $200) but the plugs near the firewall seem tough to get at.

Do mechanics use mirrors or what?
How do I change 2001 ford windstar spark plugs?
Actually the one guy is kinda right you can remove the cowl panel at the windshield however it is a little bit more involved you must remove the wiper arms (15mm nut), unplug the washer hose, remove the 4 plastic push pins at the cowl then pull upward to remove off it's clips before completely pulling it off feed the wiper hose you unplugged through the grommet then there are about 9 8mm bolts holding down the lower cowl remove the pollen filter to get to one of the bolts and make sure you unplug the wiper motor and if it has one the hood light plug then you can get to the plugs getting to them from under the van is pretty tricky too
How do I change 2001 ford windstar spark plugs?
yes mirrors are handy at times you might have to close your eyes and feel for it.but.if you jack it up you may gain access where the wheel well is.the plastic covers (wells) are removable.try autozone.com
Change the rear plugs from under the van
IT is pretty easy. that black piece that shrouds the back of the engine is easily removed, the one that acts as a shield for the lower windshield and wipers. there area about 6 tabs you pull and then the rear plugs are easy to get to. well worth the little effort as it is almost impossible to get at them from underneath as the steering is in the way.

Got a manual it tells you how to do it, I am looking at a haynes right now. :-)

Arg its pretty difficult. At a ford dealer 200 seems like a bargain. The plugs in the back are pretty hard to get, so i havent even attempted to change them myself on mine.

How often should you change your spark plugs?

I have a '98 Mazda Protege LX 1.5L 4 cylinder with just over 111,000 miles. I was wondering how often you need to change the spark plugs. Also, I heard people say they changed the wires, rotor and cap. Do you need to do that too?
How often should you change your spark plugs?
The normal rule of thumb is to change the plugs and wires every 100,000 miles. As far as the rotor...if your car has that because most vehicles nowadays are all electronic...I wouldn't replace that until you start having issues with it.
How often should you change your spark plugs?
Forget about replacing wires, The factory wires should last for the lifetime of the car, unless they have been eaten by squirrels. Power wash your engine for starters. Remove your dist cap and check it INSIDE for the presence of engine oil. Many times, oil under pressure will find it's way here. Wash it out with CRC electronic cleaner. It will remove the oil and evaporate quickly. Replace the cap and rotor at 100,000 miles, using ONLY genuine Mazda (nippondenso) parts. There is a resistor in many dist rotors that go bad with age. Locate, remove and clean your IAC valve (idle air control valve). Use Gum-out spray. Clean the throttle body and plate and PCV valve, too. Run the Gum-out through the engine with car running, warm. Any carbon inside the intake manifold will dislodge and get dispelled. When everything is factory clean, replace the plugs. Use the new Nippondenso Twin Tip plugs ($3 each). Or nippondenso Iridium plugs ($9 each). Engine and sensors should ALL be clean. Plugs are last step. These plugs will give you best power and fuel mileage. Wait and see!!!! If you MUST change the wires, use ONLY factory wires. Never short change the original parts. They were made to last longest and work the best. The plugs I have mentioned will react with modern fuel and burn more cleanly and produce more power. Emissions go down, too. For even better performance, motor flush the engine and use ELF oil (France) made for Mazda (JASO ratings). Change it once yearly. Your engine will LOVE you for it!!!! So will your lifters, rings, and other engine vitals. Good luck!!
Read your owners manual. Your car probably needs plugs at 60,000 miles or so, if your car runs on an ignition cap and wires, then yes, replace plugs, INSPECT wires for damage, check your points in the cap for wear (if dull, replace, if they have a sharp edge still, probably ok). If you car has electronic ignition, the plugs probably could go longer. My fathers ford F-250 has electronic ignition, so the plugs need replaced at 100,000 miles... factory stated.
you should change it like every 3 1/2 year

Do I need the screw on tips that come with spark plugs?

Ok, I'm changing my spark plugs, (Bosch) for the first time on a 1989 vw fox. I noticed these small screw on tips that are also in the box with each spark plug but are loose, not screwed on.

When I took the wire off my old plugs I didn't see those tips on the end so do I need to or should I use them?
Do I need the screw on tips that come with spark plugs?
No you'll be fine NOT using the tips.... IF and ONLY if your POSITIVE when you removed the old ones there were none.

it's just a different type of connector up inside the spark plug wire... one is bigger and smooth... ( the extra tips )

one is smaller and accepts the ridges.. should feel a .. zip.. pop.. click

when it is firmly in place

    hope that's helpful
Do I need the screw on tips that come with spark plugs?
Look closely at the inside of the ignition wire where it attatches to the plug. The size of the connector (inside the boot) will tell you what to do.
Spark plug makers streamline their production by allowing a plug fit several applications. Comparing your old plugs with the new ones is generally your safest bet.

If you do not have that option, try installing them into the plug wire before you put them in the engine. If they seat firmly in the wire, you're done! If not, screw the provided tips on and drive away.

    go thru the wheel well.
i know some of these vehicles are hard to work on these days. you might need an extension( a short 1 and a long 1), also get a swivel to put on the extension, it will let you get into tight places, make sure you guage them before you install them, dont go by the word, preset, on the box.
first off what is the year of the motor. On some of the newer 4.6's the plugs on top under the coils are a pain to get to and you really just have to work with it. I really don't like doing them myself but it is in the job description.

i was lookin at it yesturday and there other cables in the way and some of the spark plugs go all the way to the back
How to change spark plugs on a 1999 expedition?
Those coil on plugs are quite pricey, so I don't think so!!!! Get your 1/4%26quot; drive ratchet with the appropriate extension and 9/32 or 7mm socket to remove all the COPs (coil-on-plugs). Have fun with the one under the fuel supply and return line fittings on the fuel rail. If you have rear heat and A/C you'll need to work carefully around the heater hoses, so use caution!!! Once you do remove all COPs it's pretty straight forward to remove the plugs. Pay particular attention to cylinder #4 COP (the rear most one on the passenger side of engine). That particular COP was known to have coolant leaking on top from the heater hose to intake manifold connection. You might want to tighten up the clamp while you're %26quot;in there%26quot;. If the COP is coolant stained, replace it. Also check the COP boots for cracks or wear, and replace as necessary. It is STRONGLY recommended you use Ford/Motorcraft parts unless you want to do this job again. Hope this helps.

Spark plugs create the spark that causes combustion in an engine. Change them when suggested or when you begin having difficulties burning gas cleanly.
I would have say 2 times a year you should also change the wires to some they get small cracks an the cars does not get the juice 2 time spring and fall it also be to make sure it tune up properly this help it run smotter and save gas too with the price of gas today so high the more gas save the less you have fill and save you money hopes this helps

How do I change spark plugs on a 1997 Chevrolet astro van?

Is there anything special I should know?
How do I change spark plugs on a 1997 Chevrolet astro van?
really just make sure you have a spark plug socket. It has a rubber lining inside to help protect the porcelain casing of the plugs so they don't break when loosening or tightening. Also good idea to change one at a time and put the wire back on before moving to the next one. This will prevent you from crossing up the wire locations which could have terrible affect. Do one side of the engine then go to the other side. Also when you purchase the spark plugs from the auto parts store ask them to space them for you to the proper engine specs.( spacing the spark terminal to the filament distance) improper spacing can cause the engine to not run correctly and effect gas mileage and spark plug life.

    Good luck!

Looking at the engine they are in a line next to the engine, All six of them. reading something said there are three in front in three in back, so im not sure if what im looking at is correct. Help?
How do you change spark plugs on a 1998 pontiac Grand Prix?
ok first of all bunch of dummies telling u things that aint right. first of all it should be done at 100,000 miles so if u have over that many mile its likely it has been done already. next it is a V-6 motor, 3 plugs up fromt and 3 in the back. first step is to make sure ur engine is completly cooled down due to the fact it has alunimum heads. next step is to do one at a time. start with either side of the front of the motor. gentle pull one plug wire at a time. the tools u need is going to be 3/8drive rachet, 6in extension and 9/16 deep socket for the front and same for the back except the ones on the back are tricky. when u remove ur plug wire slip ur socket over the plug an dloosen it up, it might be tight if there are oringinal plugs, dont worry, little tug and they will come loose. next step is to get ur new plug and smear some thread antiseize on the threads, next make sure u double check ur gap on ur plugs, they are set at the factory but they do bounce around so double check that. next stick the new plug into the socket and lower to the plug hole, make sure u dont bang it around that will knock ur gap off, thread it in with the socket and extension, finger tight at first so u wont cross thread it. next just tighten it down with ur ratchet, not too tight though. the rest do the same. the back is harder but the same way. the best way is to put it up on car ramps and do it from underneth.
How do you change spark plugs on a 1998 pontiac Grand Prix?
One at a time! lol no really.your spark plugs have a spark plug wire goung to the top of it.hold the wire at the spark plug firmly and pull it off the sparkplug use a wratchet and a deepsocket and unscrew the sparkplug(righty-tighty,lefty-loosey)rep鈥?with the new one make sure to get it tight and push the wire back on,push it real hard to make sure it is all the way down. do one at a time so you dont get the wires mixed up.
the answer to ur original question is 1 at a time--lol

you are probably looking at the coil pack located on the side of the motor.

with closer inspection of ur engine you should locate them--the other end of the wires on the coil pack.

to change the ones in back it may be necessary to remove the alternator n reach in blind.

i am serious about changing them 1 at a time, this avoids improper spark timing. gl
When doing the back ones, you might have to %26quot;roll%26quot; the motor forward to give you more room. This is done by removing the 2 motor mounts on the front of the motor that bolt to the brackets on the radiator core support. There is 2 bolt through each bracket. Best to use a racheting strap to hold motor in place and to pull forward. The back 2 on the right are the worst because they are so close to each other.

ok.. OE plugs are NGK laser platnum plugs. they run about $13each.

I recommend you put the exact same plugs back in.

the plug change on the firewall side of the motor is easy, AFTER you remove the plenum (aluminum thing in middle of engine).

you'll need new plenum gaskets too.

there's like 12 bolts holding it down, and once thats off you can get to the rear plugs easily.

I recommend new plug wires at the same time.

this car isn't cheap to maintain.

Ok, pretty sure that your engine runs individual coil-packs... so you wont be chasing leads from a distributor!

Basically, look at the middle of each cylinder head, and you should find a cover that unbolts/unscrews. Under these you should find the coil-packs, and you will need to remove them as they sit directly on top of the spark plugs.

Having said that, is it definately a V6, not an Inline? If it is inline, then you will find them on the drivers side of the cylinder head.

  • How do I change the back spark plugs on a 2002 ford windstar?

My father is trying to change the spark plugs on our minivan and isn't sure how to get to them. I can't find anything online, any suggestions will help greatly.
How do I change the back spark plugs on a 2002 ford windstar?
All of the above are good answers so far. Assuming your father is not interested in crawling underneath the vehicle, or has access to the jack needed to lift it, he is probably better off removing the wiper cowl and transmission assembly (meaning WIPER TRANSMISSION, not vehicle transmission) for access. The only tools needed are a 15mm socket or wrench for the nuts that secure the wiper arms to the linkage, a philips screwdriver to remove the wiper cowl panel, and a 5/16%26quot; socket with appropriate extension and ratchet to remove all the bolts that secure the cowl panel to the body. If you need more information, e-mail me directly and I'll send instructions with illustrations. Hope this helps.
How do I change the back spark plugs on a 2002 ford windstar?
have u tried from the bottom.
It's a secret ...can't tell anybody but Ford dealers employ Farries to change those plugs...

    Ok real deal..no joke

Mechanic shops remove the wipers, cowl panel and the whole assembly underneath (The wipers are screwed on, the panels pull up and the assembly underneath is held in by 10 screws)

Provides complete and easy access to the rear three plugs and wires
take the plastic wiper linkage cover thing off between the engine bay and the windshield.
u may want to jack it up and lay underneath it. should be able to reach them
From underneath you can get to them

What is the best way to change my spark plugs?

I need to change my spark plugs and I have the socket in my set for the plugs. Do I make sure I change all of them at the same time? Do I make sure the engine is cold? It is for a 89 Olds Cutlass Ciera. And should I try to change the wires at the same time? Although that looks a little more complicated as far as where they are located...
What is the best way to change my spark plugs?
Change them one at a time but all in the same period of time, That way you know what cable goes to which plug it is very important to get that right. As far as spark plug wires go yea it would not hurt to change those too do those the same as your spark plugs one at a time to make sure the go in the right place. While you are at it, change your distributor cap too corrosion in there can cause problems.
What is the best way to change my spark plugs?
change them one at a time. change your plug wires at the same time. make sure plug gap is correct.
Yes all at the same time, but one at a time, do it cold, and do the wires as well. Just make sure u label the wires so u get them on rite again.
cold engine and one at a time so that you do not get the wires mixed up.

When a 94 Acura Legend LS gets a tuneup what is done besides changing the spark plugs? Want to do my own. Thx

Where can I buy an OBD scanner/code reader for 94 Legend? I

hear the OBD II scanners only work on 96 and newer vehicles.

Lots of double talk from the local tuneup techs. Heck, I can change

the plugs if that is all they do since they claim they can't read the

codes with the OBD II scanner/reader. Can someone who has tuned up a 91-95 Legend give me the steps and I'll try it myself.

I was quoted $28.95 per plug(x 6) and enough labor to make the

final price be $230. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
When a 94 Acura Legend LS gets a tuneup what is done besides changing the spark plugs? Want to do my own. Thx
Ouch. Pricey. A tune up would consist of plugs, rotor, distributor cap and maybe the plug wires (if it is still the originals I would seriously consider it after 12 years) Also change the air cleaner and pcv filter (or unit). Plugs are cheaper than that. Go to an autoparts store for your stuff. It does not have to Acura factory parts. They overcharge (like every dealer).

This will do you fine, for alot less.

Do change the plugs when the engine is cold(like overnight cold).

pfft, just buy new plugs if that's all they're going to do. they are, at most, 15 bucks each for platinum. install them youself
Usally when a car gets a tune-up, it gets new plugs, wires, and a new timing belt, also they check the valves (condition and spacing) and replace/adjust, if needed.
Dude, If you'd like to do it yourself, pickup a 'Haynes%26quot; manual from your nearest parts shop. The book is less than $20. %26amp; has all the info for you on your car. It's a great lesson that'll save ya big $ for years ! Also, you'll learn that platnum plugs last about 80k miles. Do a fuel filter,if it's inline, every 2 years, etc, etc........Good Luck %26amp; join us, we need more MotorHeads !
usually when cars get a tuneup what you're really talking about is an oil change, like you said the spark plugs, maybe the spark plug wires...that's it...all this everybody can do it...and it doesn't take that much time.
Change the plugs, plug wires, check the air filter and replace if needed. I am not sure if you car has an actual distributor and a cap but if it does, readjust the contact points or relaced if needed.
