Changing spark plugs when its cold? is it a bad idea?
You are actually supposed to change the plugs when the engine is cold. Metals swell when heated and the plugs will be more difficult to remove when both the head and plugs are hot, and harder to install when the plugs are cold and the heads are hot. Snapping the ceramic on the plugs usually occurs when the socket is improperly placed on the plug, the plug is struck, or if the ratchet is ****** while turning. Sub-zero ambient temperature may make the ceramic more brittle, but I am not sure. I have changed more than my share of plugs in cold weather and have never had such a problem. Use care and all should be fine.

Who ever told you than, I want a double of whatever they were drinking. Of course, the spark plugs will crack. It is from when you grab one with cold hands and it slips and falls down on the cement and cracks. Of course putting spark plugs in -200 degree weather will definitely crack them, especially when you go to tighten them.

So repair shops in the north don't replace spark plugs in the winter? And you could warm the engine up by starting it. I would warm the engine to %26quot;luke warm%26quot; (just enough to keep my hands warm while removing the plugs) and then back each plug out a half turn. Then spray penetrating oil around the threads. Later, tighten and loosen each plug (back and forth) until you can remove them easily. I wouldn't remove the plugs from an extremely hot engine without letting it cool down some.

They only crack if you tilt the socket and put pressure against the ceramic, if you have the socket on straight you will be fine.
