Changing spark plugs and wires - frequency?

I have a 1996 VW GTI (golf) Its spark plugs and wires were last changed at 122k miles and its now at about 158k. Over the past three years its had a few miss-fires and recently its been hesitating in rainy weather. What would cause the plugs and wires to be so heavily affected by the wet weather? Is around 35k miles a normal life expectancy for plugs and wires?

The car is driven regularly under fairly good conditions, I don't redline the engine or shift rough, the oil gets changed on time, although it doesn't have a garage to live in... it has to be parked out in the open unfortunately.

Thanks!

The life of spark plug and wires are dependent of the quality of the replacement product- if the plugs are platinum the recommended service interval is 100k non platinum is usually right around 50k- you may have other problems unless this is a regular thing for VW. I know wet weather drivability problems can be caused by bad wires but could also be caused by a bad baro sensor or water leaks dripping on electrical components.
