I have a 2000 ford ranger xlt truck; the check engine light is on and the computer shows that #1 and #3 are misfiring; I need to change the plugs/wires, but there is not a diagram in the book, nor can i see one on the manifold/engine area.

Don't change your spark plugs yet. Many other problems are much more likely unless your plugs are due to be replaced according to your Ford maintenance schedule. Many platinum tipped long life plugs are good for 80000 miles or more. You are probably in the early stages of %26quot;throwing parts at the problem%26quot;. It pays to do a little diagnosis first, especially with an engine misfire error code. However, I agree that the first order of business is to make sure your basic %26quot;tune up%26quot; and maintenance items on the truck have been maintained according to Ford's maintenance schedule. Note that you can easily damage the spark plug wires when trying to remove them from the spark plugs if your not careful, which can actually create an ignition spark problem rather than solve one.

like the guy above me, one @ a time, gap them correctly.... then reset the pcm to clear the codes
What do you mean by the book. If you are talking about your owners manual. It will not be in there.
A repair manual for your ranger will show you how to do it. But i may or may not show a diagram.
....have fun, the engine is quite cramed into the space...plug wires CAN be changed one by one(without mixing them up.) the wires are identified on the BOTTOM of the coil pack...the numbers shown MAY be ON THE SAME COIL which could indicate a defective coil pack. this should be checked while the coil is removed from the mounting. the wires MUST be run thru the loom to prevent damage to the new wires.
